Quote from: Rick Lowe on April 24, 2026, 06:08:51 PMI hate the idea of simply binning kits... there's usually some parts that can be of use, somewhere.
I'm happy to take cast-offs and junked kits, on that basis - the trouble is, you can end up with a distinct lack of space with that methodology (Don't Ask, etc),
and I've reluctantly come to the conclusion that you can't save everything.  :-\

I don't take in waifs and strays; I create enough part builds as it is on my own, no help required.  ;D

At today's Southdowns show at extremely good prices:
- Airfix Tempest V (post war boxing)
- NOVO Firefly (I have 2 cunning plans, 1 RW the other a whif - decisions, decisions!)
- and finally, courtesy of NARSES2: Airfix 1/72 Lysander.  I have a cunning plan!

Resisted the temptation of FROG Marylands, Baltimores, Bostons and a Wyvern.

Why?  :-\
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

So I went to the scale model show at the NEC today, will post the pics later, and managed to bag a 1/72 Special Hobby F-86L complete with Thai decals, as well as a number of OO gauge locos and a DMU that caught my eye...  :thumbsup:

And what about that Tombola prize that "didn't want to leave home " ?  ;)
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

At the Southdowns show today I got what I wass after. Airfix 1/72 E.E. Lightning at a good price  :thumbsup:

Resisted a unboxed Huma Hs 132 as the trader wanted a silly price, as far as was concerned, and I still have one unbuilt one in the stash.

I put it back in the tombola and another punter won it.

And in answer to Kit's earlier question, I was tempted by the prices (£5 each), but:
- the Baltimore and Maryland would just languish in the stash;
- got a Havoc in the stash, don't need a Boston;
- FROG and Trumpeter Wyverns plus a copy of the CMR Eagle Wyvern have been in the stash for at least a decade!

I also resisted a £5 FROG Marauder despite having a cunning whif plan for it.  Said plan depends on another build happening, which may of course never happen!  Remained tempted right up to the moment the dealer left the venue, perhaps next year.

My stash didn't grow today at the Royal Engineers Museum, because despite all the hardware there getting me fizzy for engineering vehicles, the Vintage Classics Churchill bridgelayer was marked up at £23! I thought there'd been a mistake somewhere until I looked at Airfix's website and it's £20 there!

I did watch a demonstration of a blank-firing Vickers-Maxim, though. And spoke to a man for some time about Operation XD- something there isn't a great deal of literature on but that he's involved in trying to remedy.
Perfect is the enemy of Finished. I presume. I've never achieved either.

Operation XD sounds interesting - I can see the story appearing in a Commando Comic...

Rather! The guy I was speaking to was a member of a reenacting group too and he had a stretcher laid out with all the tools and equipment they knew had been used in the XD raids, and explained their various methods of igniting anything heavier than petrol- they would use a Boys Rifle to puncture the tank holding the oil/fuel, causing it to leak out and fill up the raised area around the tank to catch any spills, then soak blankets in kerosene and lay them flat on top of the newly formed pool of oil, and then either use more kerosene-soaked blankets to make flaming torches to throw onto the blankets or fire flares at the blankets, and the resulting fire was sufficient to ignite the whole lot.

I think he said something about the blankets allowing pockets of vapour to accumulate that were easier to ignite than the open fuel, but I may be inventing that.

Vapour is what catches and burns, rather than the liquid itself.

Whatever works to get the job done.  :thumbsup:

And a refreshing change to hear of a re-enactors unit that's not just another 101st Airborne...  or SS...  :banghead:

Something I find myself saying to people who are tangentially into any military hardware is that of the events I've been to, of anybody turning up at a show with a Jeep or Bedford or Morris or a bootful of sten guns to display about half will turn up with some sort of reenactment gear on and the other half will be normal t-shirt and jeans folk.

Everybody who turns up with a kubelwagen or a blitz or a zundapp or a bootful of lugers however is in German Uniform, and they will very frequently pick the SS.

And don't get me started on wargamers...
