Quote from: RAFF-35 on December 03, 2025, 02:27:16 PMI found this fantastic project proposal from the Germans. The shape is far too bizarre for me to begin to work out how to go about building one. It's called the UGS Manta. It is an amphibious, submersible,  hydroplaning torpedo boat  :o
I got a resin kit of that one somewhere.

TomZ

I can't believe someone has produced a kit of it  :o  Who manufactured it and in what scale?

I've found a 3D print file for it but my printer is nowhere near capable enough to do a good job.

I think it is this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/257114532285?_skw=manta&itmmeta=01KBN0XQ8JR03DH0ZN8AY27SJ5&hash=item3bdd3869bd:g:5AUAAOSwWiBY-5dx

Will dig down in the stash tomorrow

Would a V/STOL Ekranoplan be allowed in this build?

The Bella-1 is an example prototype built in Russia but ran out of funding. They have classed this as an airship and there's a video of it on YouTube.
It does look like a hovercraft with wings and a twin-boom twin-tail with two turboprop engines.

The BARS hybrid airship thought up by the same bloke but I need clarification on the subject for this GB.

Thick flat sheet, or MDF, and a tube - either a sub or a Canberra model would do.

Glad to 'help'...  ;)

Wide, low aspect ratio wings! pirate the from large scale vacuform kits or whittle them out yourself.  The Revell Sea Shadow kit would make a good start for a Whiff...

Somewhere earlier in the thread we already allowed Ekranoplans.
So also V/STOL ones would be OK too.

Space capable ones would be even better  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Thanks just have to figure out how to build it from the line drawings and photos.

Or a submersible version..............  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Is the loony Manta thing actually amphibious? It appears that the wheels only function as a beaching gear.

I think you might be right. If it is so, then it would not qualify for the GB.

In the film the Manta dives into the water and transforms into a one-manned submarine.

I thought about that, and if I were doing it, the wheels would be driven by electric motors so that the craft could launch and beach independently,  similar in concept to the Seeteufel.

Just beaching would not be enough. But what if it would be able to operate on land as well......

The description in the Covert Shores entry states that each of the catamaran hulls contained an electric motor, batteries and the wheels. As the wheels were intended to give it a self-launching capability then it's likely they were powered.
