That's a bit of breakthrough on Airfix's part though, acknowledging that 3D printing is getting to be an integral part of the plastic modelling world. I doubt I'll ever be doing any such 3D printing, but many of their less ancient customers probably will.

It seems a bit much to complain that a reissue of a vintage kit doesn't contain new parts that it never had and doesn't need to be built as it was intended when originally released.
Although, all previous Vintage Classics have only had the old schemes and transfers.  This one appears to add a new scheme with new transfers.

The SRN4 sprues are the "frameless" style.  They don't have a complete continuous run of sprue around the outside.  Lacking the strength and protection provided by this perimeter means that they are vulnerable to parts being knocked off and/or damaged.  Airfix liked to use this style of sprues and their kits suffered as a result (anyone seen a Vanguard without at least one prop broken?).  Putting these sprues into bigger boxes means more rattling about and so more damage.

The 'new' SRN4 kits sprues are all in clear plastic bags, whereas the old ones were just banging about in the box. That may be a small improvement, but there's no logical reason for the MASSIVE box now, other than raising the price 'Marketing'.

Be that as it may, it's little help to us "ancients" who have neither desire nor inclination to go down the 3D road.

Rather than a breakthrough, I think it's laziness on Airfix's part and , perhaps a little presumptuous with regard to people having 3D printers?

However, it's a moot point really because won't be choosing that hideous colour scheme anyway😉😂. Kind of makes the propeller issue irrelevant.

I've got a set of six blades propellers salvaged from a 1/144 C-130. Wonder if they'd fit🤔😂. Might try that for a bit of fun

Couple of alternative theories:

1. It's about the thickness.
In one respect the Vintage Classics box is entirely appropriate, which is that it needs all of it's 3 inch thickness to protect the sprues from getting crushed when the boxes are stacked. I've just had a look at a range of other standard Airfix boxes, and all the shorter and narrower ones are also thinner. It may be that this was the smallest standard box they could get from their packaging supplier, for a reasonable price, that was 3 inches deep.

2. It's about the picture.
The standard "look" for Vintage Classics has the Roy Cross artwork extending over the whole of the box top, without the red panel on the left seen on most new-tools. That means the box has to be roughly the same aspect ratio as the art (they can crop it a little a the edges, but not much). It might be that this was the smallest suitably deep box they could get with the requisite length-to-breadth ratio.

Of course, option 3 is that it could have been both.

There's a growing push by Australian consumers to move away from cards & phones & back to cash, largely brought about by the economic downturn & the need to budget more tightly ... & a growing black economy.

Yup! Been there. I simply boycott any business I come across that doesn't accept cash.

Another very arrogant presumption that really hacks me off is : " but, everyone drives/has a car". Well, I don't and , I haven't. Last time I told someone that he looked at me as if I'd just confessed to bedding his wife! 😂😂

There's a whole genre of Youtube videos of people watching Star Wars for the first time, including, perhaps predictably, lots of young people. A lot of them are familiar with the images, characters and quotes from the general culture, but have never actually sat down and watched the movies. It's kinda fun/maddening seeing their eyes pop and hearing them say, "Wait? What? That's where that meme comes from? OMG I never realised..."

I've spent a lot of time around older people (my parents had me late in life) and it's maddening the way they increasingly get excluded from modern life by "tech assumptions". It's somehow worse that the people responsible aren't even doing it deliberately: at least good old-fashioned malice would be something you could point a finger at and push back against. The well-meaning, "but it's so much more convenient..." is harder to argue with, because the person on the other end has likely never tried to put themselves in the shoes of an old person for one second in their entire life. It's an uphill struggle trying to get it across to them that "just scan the QR code" is not convenient if it's the equivalent of saying, "the information's written on the bottom of a rock on Mars: just go and look at it".
