The Wooksta!

#225
By all accounts, the ex-Dutch aircraft were quite beat up by the time they reached Australia and the RAAF were never that keen on them.  Still, one re-engined with say Bristol Hercules and given British turrets ( a BP one with four .303s or a Bristol with 2 20mms - Shackleton?) and used for air direction over Malaya?

I think the last of the Spanish ones were retired in 1972.  They were supplemented with CASA 2.112s in the 1960s.  They were definitely used for SAR operations, I've decals for one - they were in that Dekno conversion I picked up at Telford.

Received today from eBay

1 x 1/72 Airfix 682 Short Stirling. Even though the box indicates that this might be an initial boxing, I am going to modify the contents.

Might have bought yet another Heller Viggen, just because it was ridiculously cheap.

I did also snatch a KP Su-7BKL. It was reasonably inexpensive but most importantly, a bit rare these days. So I just thought better safe than sorry..

It's currently available - or at least was until recently - in a Smer box.  I bought one as a fuselage donor.

You could change that for a whiff of course. Say more of them, in better condition, reached Aus, as did a shipment of Wright Cyclone spares intended for the Dutch East Indies that never got that far. Invent some problem with the RAAF getting Catalinas and you have a different outcome.

Of course that raises the possibility of other export variants with other engines. They couldn't be Hercules because they'd have to be available pre-war.

The trials aircraft had 600 hp Junkers Jumo 205C diesels.
The Dutch aircraft had 1,000 hp Wright R1820-G102 Cyclones.
The Dutch aircraft that ran out of Cyclone spares in German service were re-engined with 865 hp BMW 132Ns.
The German/French aircraft had 1,000 hp BMW Bramo 323-R2 Fafnirs.

Bristol Mercuries would be in the right range, as would some of the Gnome-Rhone radials.

I have to buy them internationally, unfortunately, and either the freight or the brexit related taxes are killing the deal.. So 2nd hand it is..  :-\

Quote from: The Wooksta! on February 19, 2026, 04:04:04 AMThe Academy Avenger is mid/late 1980s (I built it in early 1989) and is a copy of ye olde Frog kit.  I had a part started one, which I was intending to finish as one of the Highball versions, but decided to simply get shot and gave it to one of the lads at the Club.  He finished it as a water bomber.

I'd use that resin engine on a better kit.  Putting it on the Airfix one would be akin to putting lipstick on a pig.

Correct on both counts.  Resin engine includes the rear mounted supercharger and more than compensated for my bidding in error.

IIRC the ex Dutch Do-24s flew into Broome (NW Western Australia) with Dutch East Indian refugees on board.  They were then attacked on the water by Japanese aircraft (can't remember if it was immediately or later).  The wreckage of at least one aircraft can be seen at low tide.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed, badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry.

Lucky purchase: another anime figurine/model, and a real bargain! Got hands on a Plamax ~1:8 Mari Makinami Illustrous in the late pink plugsuit (from the Rebuild of Evangelion series) IP kit from a German retailer for less than EUR 30,- and relatively small domestic postage - these kits normally go for EUR 75,- and far more in Japan and the USA, plus partly ridiculous international postage and custom fees!   A real bargain. No plan for the kit/figure yet, it might be built OOB.
