I gloss cleared over the transfers today.  Next a satin coat over the whole airframe.
Then attach the legs and doors and canopy and turret and weapons.
And write a load of bollocks back story.

Am I alone in painting the model and then thinking about who the user would be?  I don't always do it this way but find that sometimes i get a betterer result if I wait to see how the scheme looks before I decide who flies it.

Not me - the end-user is usually part of the justification for the model existing in the first place. I've found that having the complete concept worked out in fairly fine detail is one of the better antidotes to my chronic didn't-finish-due-to-lost-mojo problem. Hitting a show-stopper because I didn't think it through beforehand is one of the surest ways to trigger the mojo crash.

I'll use either method, but I have also changed users partway through a build... but also as you said, no clear goal can relegate the model to the 'Box-of-Incompletedness'  *sigh*

For me the look of the thing is more important than the back story.  The goal is the image I have in my head (or rarely, on a piece of paper or in a picture), not to fit into a story.
Well, not always anyway.
As per Kit's Second Rule, the story can always be adjusted to fit the model.

Having satin cleared this on Satyrday, on Monday I sanded back a couple of runs and then touched up where I went through to the primer.  This morning I satin cleared it again.
I've started putting weapons together.
