I thought that, as Kit was interested in the model of the Lord Clyde, that he might find THIS build of some interest.

You BET he's interested in that build, thanks Alastair.

I'm intending to see what prices the traders are offering for the kit at Telford, discounts always being welcome.  ;D

I've got a bit of a problem getting to Telford now.......

I went to start my car on Saturday and it fired twice and stopped. No matter how much churning I gave it, it didn't fire at all after that, so I called the RAC.

The RAC guy used his tricky PC thingie and it came up with every fault code you could imagine! But no matter what he did it wouldn't fire, so he arranged for a tow into the local garage for me this morning, which we did. Then the local garage man phoned me to say it's dead..................... :(

It looks like the cam chain broke and the valves hit the pistons and bent and there's almost no compression on two of the six cylinders so it needed a total engine re-build, which would have cost more than the car did, IF we could have got the parts! But thanks to Stellantis, Vauxhall's new owners, caring SO much for their old customers, they scrapped out all the spares for cars that old, so I'm stumped. The cars a scrapper sadly at it was very VERY good.

So tomorrow I'm off looking for replacements, and I have three to go and look at already.

Life's never easy, is it?

Condolences on the Vauxhall, Kit.  And Stellantis is just pure evil.  Apparently when they were designing the wiring harness for the new (rather GMC looking) Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer's backup camera, they made it barely long enough to plug in...and ran it in a straight line in the cabin.  So to replace it, techs have literally disassemble the interior.

Sadly it's all linked to the replace don't repair attitude that's prevalent in almost everything nowadays. Quite funny that the best critique of this practice is the kids film Robots!

That's just fine for the original manufacturers, their CEO's bonuses and their shareholders, but it's a DISASTER for people who don't have that kind of money. It's a pity they don't think of that sometimes.

And I don't want a diatribe about 'that's what capitalism is all about' either. There are limits to such practices, or there should be!

Everything is designed to be manufactured as quickly and easily as possible. Repair is not even considered. It makes it cheaper to buy a new one, car or otherwise, rather than fix the old one.

Yeah, don't get me started on that! (I know, I know - I'm a Self-Starter...  ;)  )

That's just mean and nasty, but sadly it's about average.

Sorry for your loss, Kit, and hopefully you can organize a replacement quickly.

And that doesn't even begin to describe the brachial gymnastics one has to do to simply change a bulb in modern cars...

To change a headlight bulb in a Chevy truck I had to take off the whole grill. Then a month later the other bulb went out!

That's why you replace them at the same time

That is good advice.

Except I didn't think of that at the time, and replaced the brake bulbs one at a time... then the same brake light went after a few months...
At least the car tells me when that's happened, which is nice.
