Along with a clip-in ELINT suite in the bomb bay instead of a permanent installation, so that the RSwAF can have a pair of bombers readily available if the Sovs start rattling sabres.

On an entirely different topic.

A friend of mine died some days ago. Not one of my closest friends, but still a chap I liked a lot, and whose somewhat wry sense of humour appealed to me. A lot. We shared the cancer diagnosis, but the general belief was that his was more treatable than mine, and that I should lead into the next dimension, but strangely, as it happens, the opposite turned out to be the way things has taken place. So now he's gone. His widow is battling not only the loss of her lover and confidente, but also her best friend, soul mate and father of their children. And worst, as some of us here are well aware of, all the smaller and larger adminstrative things that have to be dealt with when someone leaves the party in this over-registered era.

Having been living myself in the valley of Death for almost a decade now, I am not that troubled by the transition as such. We are born, we live and we die, and hopefully, we do most of that predominantly happily, maybe even spreading some joy and light along the route we take. What's getting me is the speed at which he went. We spoke in the beginning of summer, and then no more. And back then, we were both rather confident for the autumn, at least. More foresight than that wasn't really on any chart, given our circumstances.
So I feel a bit robbed, and I'm not looking forward to the funeral. While important, they're not for the deceased but rather for those left behind. And I don't know his family at all. Still, I might go, just to show his loved ones that my mate mattered also for people they didn't know. But I'm not going to enjoy it.

Well, enough about that, and you don't need to offer any condolences or so. I'm perfectly fine having aired my feelings a bit. And if my work hadn't taken off so rapidly this morning, I might even had gotten a second layer of paint on the odd Draken. Well, the day isn't entirely over yet..
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

My commiserations to you for the loss of a friend, and his family.

The late Mrs_PR19 was of the same opinion as you Mr. Pellson, we're born, we live our lives and we die, and that's the way things go no matter what else happens.

During her last years she said she didn't want any of that 'weeping and wailing' at her funeral, and that the event should be a celebration of her life, and no-one was allowed to wear black and we should all wear 'something colourful', and the great majority of those attending did so too.

Quite deliberately my eulogy for her was humorous, almost to an extreme, as the celebrant for the occasion said she'd never celebrated at a funeral where everyone laughed so much. I told a number of tales of Mary's life, most of which had a very funny tilt to them and that did the job a treat, we DID celebrate her life rather than mourn her loss.

Keeping that sort of thought in your mind may make your friend's funeral more bearable.

Madame R (as an Anglican Lay Reader)  has taken a fair few funerals, and says "WELL DONE KIT!  A  life well lived deserves celebration"      Pellson is correct, funerals are for those left behind.  It can mean  a great deal to relatives that friends and work colleagues turn up.

I have seen suggestions that someone take the deceased's cellphone and send out a mass "Thanks for coming" text.

I honestly think >THIS< is a pretty solid standard setter as far as funerals go. But you might want to clear the outlines with the closest family in advance.
