A rather slow Friday with a number of equally unnecessary and uninteresting meetings, during which I might have surfed away a bit on the webz. For some reason, I came across a statement claiming that the RSwAF actually seriously considered a version of the Avro Vulcan Mk 2 for intelligence duties. Two airframes were to be procured, and the main argument for the type was the type's impressive ceiling of 65 000 ft, allowing for a very nice coverage of the eastern parts of the Soviet Union indeed. However, the partly governmentally owned airline SAS were looking to replace their Sud Avionics Caravelle medium range airliners, giving the RSwAF an offer on two airframes that proved hard to overlook as parts of maintenance was to stay with SAS while the engines, RR Avons, were very closely related to the Avons used in some Lansens and Drakens. Also, the possibility to carry a larger number of system operators was attractive even if from a sheer performance perspective, the Caravelle obviously wasn't anywhere near the Vulcan.

However.. What if.....

I might need to buy another Vulcan...

True, but wouldn't it look magnificent!

Two boring humdrum real world thoughts.  Firstly, it it's operating at maximum altitude, would it need any camouflage (at this point , one googles "Project Yehudi")?  and secondly, what would the Soviet Union have to say about  a couple of large nuclear capable aircraft so close to their borders?

There was a little bit of distance between Sweden and the Soviet Union - escept perhaps over the Baltic sea.

Boring answers:
I also don't think high altitude ELINT/SIGINT assets would have been camouflaged. Especially as they wouldn't have been expected to "hide" on dispersed road bases in wartime, rather rebasing at regular airports out of range of Soviet tactical aircraft.
The Canberra T.11's they were intended to replace flew their entire career unpainted, and the Caravelles that did replace the Canberras fielded a rather nice blue/white scheme.

You cannot view this attachment.

Whether they Soviets would have liked nuclear weapons in their vicinity is not a relevant question. The Soviets then, as the Russians now, have a lot of ideas about things they have f@ck all to do with, and I am a firm believer of the theory that the best way to "appease" a Russian is to prove to him that as soon as he steps out of line, he loses his foot. Accordingly, I believe the entire west should provide the Ukrainians with whatever they want, in huge no's, and on top of that be grateful beyond reason that they're taking the necessary fight for us.

That said, Swedish reconnaissance Vulcans would have been permanently rebuilt to house and operate electronic equipment, and this would have been rather evident once you took a look at the aircraft in question, antennae and all. Hence, the nuclear issue won't become relevant from that reason either.

One would still look great in that scheme though.  ;D
