Is this fellow whiffer on commission from the Swedish tourist people?  His photos make it look most appealing.

I really MUST revisit Sweden (and Norway too)    The last time I was there was 1967!!

Quote from: kerick on August 07, 2025, 04:54:06 AMHalf my family came from Sweden back in the 1890's and I really need to visit the mother country once. In the summer I suppose.

Well - I would say so..  ;)

Then again, that might depend on where they did come from. There are a few places that actually do benefit from ice and snow..

Last couple of times I was in Sweden I was at the now Outokumpo Avesta plant. Tends to get quite warm in steelworks  ;)

Back home in our standard residence as Mrs P's lovely Danish relatives are on short finals. It'll be really nice to see them again, even if this does mean an interruption of my current modelling flow. That trainer Mod 4 Draken is progressing nicely. That said, it's currently somewhat on hold anyway as it's waiting for the wing donor, and while I had some hopes that the old Revell Gripen kit would arrive before the weekend, it didn't.

What did arrive though is another old piece of Revell guesswork - the very speculative ATB.

It's a bigger box that I had anticipated or understood, and said box is in rather bad nick as well, so I might get to work on it sooner than I had planned. After all, I just bought it as i stumbled on it, but it'll obviously make a great BAe Vulcan II bomber, flying for the no 617 sqn.

Also, that dead cheap Hasegawa Draken arrived

I think that's my eighth or ninth Hasegawa Draken kit, but I've just completed two, working on a third. However, they're so nice and there's always an idea for a Draken, so I'll probably keep my eyes peeled for more, if the price is right.

Well, Mrs P has that gaze again, meaning there's something I should do rather than doing this, so I'd better get on with it, whatever is is..

That's one of the reasons why, as a bloke, you can marry a lady from another country who doesn't pocess a word of your native language, and you know of hers, and yet you still know when they are annoyed and indeed what you arre expected to be doing, rather than what you want to be  ;)

Well, Mrs P is born and bred in Sweden, but by a Danish mother, so it's obviously me having had to learn Danish while she's been fluent in Swedish from the start..

As the old Gripen kit still is in transfer, the Sk35G is sitting idle. On the other hand, the relatives have arrived, so there's beer and barbecue galore instead, so I'm kept busy..  ;)

The Sk35G wings have arrived, together with the rest of that Revell kit, meaning grossly inaccurate but still Swedish looking missiles and other magnificent whif fodder. Also, the literally stone age Lindberg 1/48 Draken came, meaning I could start project work for the long range SAAB bomber. Unfortunately , I'm too full of barbecue to do anything about it at this time..

This SAAB bomber sounds interesting!  As for the present, enjoy your barbecue, the kits will still be there tomorrow.

Having left all my modelling stuff behind for this, the final summer holiday session at the cottage, I'm resorting to surfing on various whiffs and whif ideas. Staying with the current SAAB theme, surfing on SAAB what ifs will render you an interestingly high proportion of models by our dear @Dizzyfugu, and to be honest - it's a lot of good work having been put in by Thomas over the years!

As I'm currently still in the process of building trainer versions, Thomas's Sk29B is an interesting idea, and I might take that one up, one way or another. That will however mean that I'll have to acquire another Heller Tunnan kit. Now, that was unexpected (not)! Well, they're not that uncommon, so I'll just wait for one to pass by on Evilbay, I guess. I'll probably not go the Vampire trainer way, maybe rather use some NF DH Venom stuff I have lying around. And also, I'll stick with the later J29E wings providing a higher critical Mach number.

Another nice idea of Thomas's is the GE79 powered strike Draken variant. Again, I'll probably do my own variant, but the idea of using that horrendously inaccurate Revell exhaust for that purpose isn't bad at all. Combining that with a @mat style dogtooth wing will produce something along the lines of the actually proposed J79 powered Draken suggested for export. I'll have to read up on end user, though.

Right. Counting the yet unstarted SAAB two engined delta wing project, the B18/Il-28 inspired bomber project, the SAAB/Kawasaki Sk90 trainer and the actually already started A36 strike fighter project, this leaves me with six different SAAB's in addition to the already ongoing four Drakens and three Viggens.
We shall see whether the mojo lasts

After having seen the illu of a jet powered Saab 18 (I also wonder where the heck the landing gear is supposed to go...?) I cannot make it unseen and have been thinking about a fictional Saab project from the Tunnan era, powered by two RR Ghost engines, as a successor of the Mosquito and maybe Venom night fighters, but quickly superseded by the Lansen. I have a surplus Matchbox Skyknight kit (with wrong sprues, it's incomplete but the fuselage is usable) and wonder about a design with swept shoulder wings and underwing engines in bulky nacelles, maybe with a tandem landing gear...? ;-)

Currently have another project on the bench, but might start a donor parts safari, soon, because I like the wacky idea and the potentially whale-ish look of that thing.

All dark olive 325M green, and with a sqn colour ring behind the radome.. ;)
Basically, I think you could build the two-engined Lansen predecessor from a Skyknight fuselage to be honest. I'll see if I can find a sketch..

I was not aware of a real Saab design in such a configuration? Just made sense to me with the technology of the era.  Makes me curious - any project number/designation available?

It's the P1100:

It's one of the prestudies before the more powerful Avon engine became available.
