Let's remember none of these civilisations remain today!  Keep it decimal, kids.  And your numbers simple.

I left school just before decilmalisation started. Why I still hold the School's Senior 880 yards record  ;)  ;D

My stepfather kept a book of conversion tables on his desk at home,he also showed me the 'old money' that they used to use in the UK and compared it to the new coins and notes.
Ordering timber is a nightmare, should have stuck with imperial measurements.

Not if you can find someone who remembers the old sizes to help you.  Then they'll understand a 4by2 frame clad with sheets of 8by4 and held together with 3inch nails.  😛

Decimalisation happened while I was at senior school. Several of us used to quiz each other on how much in new money is... or the other way around. I think there may have been little conversion charts or wheels available at the time. I only had problems with some of the larger values, such as a half or a full crown. It was a while ago.

I'm constantly surprised that both Australia (1966) and New Zealand (1967) decimalised their currencies before the UK (1971).

Canada ditched the pound in 1867, the provinces were drifting away from Sterling before that.

I was born after few years after decimilisation so Ive never understood £sd, although young enough to remember adults struggling with decimal, especially my grandparents. My parents tended to view it with nostalgia rather than missing it.

Length and weights were different though as they continued to operate side by side and imperial stillness hasn't entirely gone. I'm more confident with metric but can work in imperial. We still haven't changed distance over to kilometres, although I have slight understanding from hiking when I was younger.

I think with those measurements the decision was taken, even if unofficialy, to just let the old Imperial measurements die out. If so then it was one of the few sensible decisions the Civil Service ever made  ;)

One of  the problems with pre-decimal currency was the old penny (240 to the £). It was a big, heavy lump and cheap enough that you could grind it to have a sharp edge and chuck them at the opposition during a football match. Saw a few nasty injuries caused by those.   Mind you that's when Football Hooliganism was at its peak. :-\

The U K actually started to go decimal in 1849, with the introduction of the florin.........two shilling piece.......1/10 of a pound.  it's just that it took 122 years (until 1971) to finish the job.

The first proposal for a decimal currency was made........................wait for it!............................in 1682 at which time I believe that it was decided that there should be careful consideration of the proposal before further action was taken.

It's quite common to hear someone ask for a 4by3 sheet of 8mm ply or 3 feet of 10mm pipe and nobody bats an eyelid.

This actually makes perfect sense: if the ply is sold in metric thicknesses then there's no point asking for it in anything else. However if it's to fit in a 4 ft by 3 ft hole, then asking for a 1219.2mm x 914.4mm sheet for the sake of consistency is pointlessly fiddly.
