Yeah, that was exactly what Mum and I did with my first model - I recall now it was an Airfix Seahawk jet.
Painted in black over yellow, with house paint, 'borrowed' from Dad... ah, memories.

I seem to remember painting a Bf-110 in thick , green household paint! 😂😂

Dad worked for BR. A few of my early models got painted in "standard BR Southern Green"

That first B-17 that I had was painted in real RAF 'High Speed Silver' too. On a model it was a bit TOO thick!  :o

I do not remember which Airfix kit was my first in about 1959 or 60.  Whatever it was I remember it was the pilot was not a separate part but moulded half on each fuselage side.  I do remember building Spitfires and also Bf 109, Zero, Sea Hawk, Me 262, Hart, Gladiator and many, many more (I still have the Hart).

My most distinct memory was when I was 8 years old when the new Spitfire Mk IX was released.  So I saved up my pocket money and had to wait until we visited Gran's in Leith.  Dad and I visited Harburn Hobbies and I asked for the Spitfire Mk IX.  The lady said they didn't have that one, but would a "Spitfire (Phonetics here) emm kay eye ex" do?

You'd be surprised how often I hear Mk pronounced as "emm kay" in videos by 20-30-something Youtubers. It doesn't help that text-to-vocie programs and AI chatbots do it, so "it must be right"... :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Of course the classic mistake in the other direction is pronouncing the MK in the names of various German firearms as "mark" when in that instance it really is "emm kay" because it's an abbreviation of  "Maschinenkarabiner" ("machine-carbine": assault rifle) or Maschinenkanone ("machine-cannon": autocannon).

D'ya know I think it's more a case of people not having much of an idea of a particular subject and not bother to understand a little bit more about it before spouting off.  Therefore definitely lazy and/or careless.

Anyway, back to Airfix.

I don't recall my very first build (I do recall building Spitfire Emm Kay One Ex and Ye Olde Mosquito FB.6) but I clearly recall having an Airfix Lancaster, B-17, P-40 and a Spitfire.  All well made so must assume Dad made them.

My first Airfix kit was the 1/72 Folland Gnat with the Red Arrows decals. I wasn't very good at painting back then opting for the Matchbox kits which had different coloured parts.
Once I knew how to thin down the paints and use different colours other than the ones shown in the instructions the kits provided by my mum and dad got bigger especially at Christmas. The USS Enterprise from the TV series Star Trek, with a lot of help from my dad and the Cutty Sark. Well we ran into problems with the rigging and opted for cotton sails ( pieces of cotton rolled up with thread tied to the beams) until mum decided to dust the model, that's what got me into kitbashing. My little sister thought that it could float in the bath, sank like a stone,  whereas the USS Enterprise did manage to float for a few seconds!
