We've been buzzed this morning, at a pretty low level, by two black RAF Hawks going like the clappers heading up the Severn.

On a SATURDAY? What IS the RAF coming to old chap, doncha know we have more important things to do of a weekend than fly?  ;D

Correct. Red to right is Wrong as I learned it.
Maybe it was flying inverted.

Well that would explain why the engine(s) sounded 'off' to me. I have an ear for engines and this did not sound 'right' to me. Ie: Not the same as any I'd heard before.

Or in reverse?

Am I thinking watercraft with Port being red and Starboard green?

Something interesting for those that are not sure

Long word           Short word
Starboard            Port
Right                  Left
Green                 Red
If I'm not building models, I'm out riding my dirtbike

Possibly the squadron CO and  Adjutant heading for Leuchars.  They may have had their golf clubs in the back seats and were hoping for a round at St Andrews.

Too foggy to see anything in the sky today ! Argh. Stopped at Warplane Park and saw the display there, an F-100, a Corsair and and A10. There was also a civil Herc from Prescott on the ramp.

How I remember it is Port wine is red (well Ruby is anyway.  Tawny is still more red than green) and port, like left has 4 letters.

So basically aircrat should pass starboard to starboard like ships?
"Just which planet are you from again"?

JayBee

No, you pass so that the other aircraft is on your port/left side.
This is because the aircraft commander is responsible for the aircraft safety, and where you have two pilots sitting side by side, the commander is, by convention, in the left hand seat.

So what happens if a fixed wing aircraft is head on to a helicopter where the PiC is on the RIGHT hand side? Does it automatically result in a mid-air?

The Rules of the Air state that you both manoeuvre to your right so that the other aircraft will pass down your left hand side.
In an overtaking situation, the overtaking aircraft moves to the right.
In a crossing situation the aircraft that has the other aircraft approaching from the right is to move to the right to enable it to pass behind.

I hope all helicopter pilots know that..........
