2026/2027 GB Season - Call for Ideas

Right here we are, this is the place to submit your ideas which will then go forward for voting to determine the subjects of the 2026/2027 GB Season.

The top 3 in the final poll will be the subjects for this year's Group Builds.

Now I know I'm banging my head against a brick wall, but please, please think about your ideas before submitting them, particularly that they offer a broad enough canvas so that as many members as possible could and would be able to take part, plus try and ensure that they are at least practical in terms of building them as well as asking yourself if you would take part in that GB if your idea was chosen. Indeed may I even suggest that you jot your ideas down on a piece of paper and think about them over night before suggesting them ?

You may find that if I personally think the idea is a little bit open for interpretation shall I say, I'll come back to you with a request for a little more detail.

Can I also remind you that subjects from the previous 2 GB Seasons are not eligible. Thus : The Polar Wars : The Bad Idea : Lunar Vehicles/Spacecraft : Amphibian/Amphibious and Operation Downfall GB's  are not eligible as subjects for this season's GB's. (the third GB of last year's season was the In Memoriam GB)

I will aim to run any necessary preliminary poll round about the 4th June and the final round of voting will take place on or around 16th June.

The Season will run :

The One Week GB 11/7/26 to 19/7/26. (If there is enough enthusiasm for it)

GB 1 1/8/26 to 31/10/26. GB2 1/12/26 to 28/2/27. GB 3 1/4/27 to 30/6/27.

Thank you

Chris
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I'll put the first suggestion forward and that is an Antipodean/ANZAC GB in honour of Phil and Brian.

I did my research a few weeks ago (read last year's suggestions) and in lieu of coming up with anything myself I'm going to reiterate some of those that I really liked:

Inspired by suggestions by Zenrat I'd like to suggest the Smugglers GB and the Back Of The Hangar/Barn Find GB.

For smugglers you could put together something like a Grumman albatross full of bricks of some sort of substance it intends to drop off for collection or a modified Opel Blitz stacked to the rafters with contraband American Nylons.

For the back of the Hangar/Barn Find it would be prototypes or niche models that didn't enter service and were perhaps found in a hangar in France as the allies reclaimed it or a new variant of Sherman that wasn't ready for production come VJ day and got left to languish. I imagine a focus on weathering.

Kerick suggested the Movie Prop GB, for which you would put together something in the vein of the Buchons from The Battle Of Britain, the "Mig" from Top Gun or the tank from Indiana Jones. Anything that could come from the addled mind of a film-maker desperate for something that looks "right" on screen even if totally inaccurate.

RAFF35 suggested a Thunderbirds GB, for which I'd like to broaden into a Gerry Anderson GB. For this I picture anything from kitbashing parts together to make a top secret fighter jet worthy of sabotage by the hood to painting a CH54 in bright green with the number 2 all over it.

As for my own ideas, I'd like to put forward the Engineers Vehicles GB- think bridgelayers, flails, fascine carriers, cranes, tanks with demolition mortars.

And thank you Chris for the admin!
Perfect is the enemy of Finished. I presume. I've never achieved either.

Shouldn't that be Downfall?  Or did we do an Overlord GB recently?

1) Drone GB
A drone defined as a remotely piloted vehicle (Air/Sea/Land). So "piloted", not an independent AI vehicle!
From all ages, on earth or in space or on other worlds

2) "Operation Highjump" (1946–1947) GB
US operation in Antarctica, officially to establish a research base. Rumoured to be an operation against a secret Nazi base.
Open to models of US and others (Nazi flying saucers?, Aliens?)

3) Air racers GB
Aircraft from any era built, modified or used as air racers. From any country.

And yes, I am willing to moderate any of them  ;D

Or a passenger liner to a bomber.

My favourite time of the year.  When the suggestions are fertile and bursting with possibilities which we later constrain with the rules.
 ;)

Consulting my list...

Chris's Choice GB - Chris chooses the subject, Chris sets the rules (no-one else gets a say), and then Chris hands it over to a pair of experienced mods to run leaving him free to join in.  Chris puts a huge amount of work into the GBs and its about time he got something out of it.  Him choosing the subject makes it most likely, IMO that he will actually join in.

Soviet GB - Last done 2016.  Anything from the Soviet Union.  1922 to 1991.

Sci Fi GB - Last done 2017.  A proper anything goes Sci Fi GB.  Not limited like the lunar vehicles/spacecraft GB.

South of the Border GB - Central/Latin/South America.  From Mexico's Northern border to Tierra Del Fuego.  Malvinas included...

Rule Six GB - Least said about this the better.

I also had an Absent Friends GB and an Antipodean GB, but these have been combined very adequately by Chris.

1)The Age of Steam.

Locomotives, steam engines mobile or static, ships, tanks, airships, vehicles. Time frame 1820-1920.

2) The alternative Berlin Airlift

Aircraft that could have taken part in the Berlin Airlift but didn't. That's not to say that you can't modify any aircraft that did take part. Aircraft that were recommissioned after retirement or captured by the Allies.

3) The Malayan Emergency 16th June 1948 to 31st July 1960

This includes any Commonwealth country or other countries that took part in the conflict. Machinery, vehicles, artillery, ships and aircraft used or might have been considered using during the Emergency.

So would a suggestion be "Civilian to Military" ?  Take a subject that was designed, built and used purely for civilian purposes and then converted for military use ?

Operation Overlord GB - similar rules structure to the Downfall GB.  Attacking and/or defending Whiffs.  Funnier funnies or the Atlantic Wall of hilter's dreams.

I was just thinking about converting things both directions. The Lockheed Ventura to a bomber was successful. Many of those proposals were not.
