TinySHAR - LANDED!

While I was sitting NOT drawing up the decals for my Master and Dragon models (See the 'FRUSTRATION' thread elsewhere...) I just couldn't do nothing, so I looked for a quick model to build while waiting for my latest trackball to arrive early next week.

I found this one lurking around, as they do, and it seemed to fit the bill nicely.



I'd built a few of these for the MEGA-long build of my RC 'Atlantic Conveyor' RC model ship and remembered how neat they were, and so it proved. The moulds have worn a bit since I got my first batch of these decades ago, but they're not too bad and only needed a little flash removed. One area that needed LOTS of de-flashing was the monster intakes though, a characteristic of all Harriers. In the case of this Minicraft SHAR the intakes needed cutting out entirely as they were totally flashed over, a bit silly when they actually provide the huge fan on the front of the Pegasus engine as part of the model!

The only other internal part is the somewhat basic MB seat, but remember it IS a 1/144 scale kit. Here's the entire 'insides' assembled.....



I'll bet you can't even see the seat and the fan, but they are there I can assure you.

Being so small, and having so few parts meant the build was stupidly fast, and I rapidly got the swivelling nozzles in position, rotated downwards of course, and glued on the other fuselage side.



And shortly after that the wings and tailplane were in position too.



And just to show how stupidly small this model is, here it is with a Revell Contacta pot towering over it!



I'm just going to splodge black paint over the cockpit internals, no sense in doing anything else, and I've yet to decide what colours to do it in, but my fave may be 809 NAS's special pale grey colour that they carried on their voyage south on the Atlantic Conveyor in 1982.

And doing this one has given me ideas for the forthcoming Amphibious GB too, and no, I'm NOT going to put floats on the SHAR!

You have to admit that a centerline float with outriggers would make for a true Sea Harrier

I've got one of those! It's currently say on the SoD awaiting completion. Not entirely sure why it stalled but I decided to do it in flight and modified the "bombs" to represent fuel tanks.

I seem to remember the pitot tube breaking off very easily...

1/144 scale pitot tubes ALWAYS do that.

I replace them with fuse wire automatically these days.

It's pitot has broken off already.

Lovely. Looking good so far ! Are they still available ? I'm in need of some 144 scale harriers. Both the SHAR and the GR.3

SHARs are much more available than the GR1s. The GR1s don't have the laser noses and came from Crown originally and were later re-popped by Revell, Academy & Minicraft, but seem to be almost extinct now sadly.

I needed 6 x GR3s for my Atlantic Conveyor and had to try and 'convert' some SHARs back, but I can't say they were all that successful, plus I had to add the laser nose too.

Luckily when aboard the AC the GR3s were hidden under tarpaulins. 

Looking it up on Scalemates it looks like they converted the GR1 moulds to the SHARs, so that could explain why the GR1s are extinct.

I built one of these many years ago in a USN light grey and Sharkmouth markings for the USN VF-111 Sundowners squadron.

As if they'd bought into the small carrier idea for Sea Lane Control. The pics and post seem to have gone from here now.
