Warrior, Republic P-44.

Lightning: Lockheed P-38
Lightning: English Electric
Lightning: Lockheed Martin F-35

Still happened though...
True but those are all from different eras, the P-44 and the possible critter under discussion would be contemporaries.

I have this book, the main part is an alphabetical listing by manufacturer/builder with company designations and name, if applicable. It also has an index of names. Any name used multiple times lists all of the companies, or individuals who used that name. It's an interesting reference.

Nice - that looks like a very useful reference.

Here's one that I recommend: World encyclopedia of Aircraft Manufacturers by Bill Gunston. Basically a potted history of EVERYONE who's ever made a plane. Surprisingly good linear read as well as a dip-in reference book too:

Not saying that's wrong, given your authoritative reference book, but every source I can find online (caveats, caveats...) states that the XP-44 was given the official USAAF designation "P-44 Rocket". Even if "Warrior" was in use as an unofficial company designation, that official designation might lead Westland to conclude, not unreasonably, that "Warrior" was free. In any event, the P-44 was cancelled fairly quickly, without even a prototype being built, because it was overtaken by the P-47.

Warrior was evidently used in reference to the R-2800 powered production version of the P-44.

History hasn't done well for aircraft with such names usually, the Blackburn Blackburn being the classic example.

It has to be THE leading contender in the 'World's Ugliest Aeroplane' stakes!  :-\
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Which was so ugly that the FAA turned it down and purchased the Blackburn Blackburn instead.
