Now all you aircraft nuttas out there will know off this plane ,,,either the first one which was a proof of concept or the proposed aircraft for service with the US Navy .
It's been a want of mine for yrs but its one of those aircraft which there's not alot of models off .
Then one day while taking a looksie at my fav auction sites ( Trademe) in the 48th models section i came across a 48th scale ( strange that  ;D ) Kitty Hawk XF5U-1 Flying pancake and my first thought was " Mine!!" ..and then it was
SO once it was in my grubby hands i had to build it ,,,,wellll ,,us lot being wiffy builders it didn't take long before the itch hit and the brain went off in it's own direction
This is how its looking now ,,,

Now you'd think thats thats about it wouldn't ya ?
Nope  ;D
I was looking at the propellers and i was thinking " Contra props would look different " ,,cause that raised the question how the hell am i going to do that ,,,wellll
A  very long minute ago i brought these drone propellers  for a build which will be starting in the very near future but they weren't brought for contra props ...but they did come as two left hand and two right hand direction props ...once i found em they did need a wee bit of work ,,they had 6 blades per prop so i had to remove three as i didn't want this to be to busy ,,this is the result .

And now the build so far ,,and yep ,,a couple more mods to go  ;D

I'm going to cut the landing gear down about 10 to 15mm in height so that it's got a better profile as the way it looked sitting so high annoyed me .
The colour choice for this is going to be easy ,,dark blue ,,easiest colour choice i've ever had  ;D

Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

That looks fantastic Phil, but in the RW it wouldn't work as Zimmerman intended as contra-props wouldn't generate the vortices that the Pancake design wing relied upon to lift well enough.

{JMN mode off]

It probably wouldn't matter with your version though because you'd added LONGER WINGS!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Honestly ,,the longer wings didn't click that that's one of your favs ,,now it has so i'm happy about that
Oh also .,,,you'll notice the exhausts ...its also got more powerful engines  ;)
What the hell those engines might be tho is another question all together  :o

Just what I did with my two seat trainer Pancake, I figured the real thing would have used turbo-props in service, made much more sense.

i haven't seen that build Kit ,,that sounds bloody cool
As for the power thing ,,well we all know that its always better to have much more power than to not have enough  ;D
That's always been my train of thought

Here's a taster pic of it.

That's actually really cool!  If the Navy really wanted a turboprop fighter, that would have been the way to go (not the Thunderscreech!).  Would still have been really loud, though not having supersonic props would help with that somewhat...

Love the concept. Nice work on the props I've used drone props on a few of my builds saves s lot of time.

Have you got enough ground clearance on the props?

Thanks so much, I really enjoyed doing that one, and it came out just how I'd thought of it in the first place. Always a good thing.  ;D
