Quote from: PR19_Kit on September 01, 2025, 06:35:30 AMHow about grafting on a Lightning intake? That'd be a SERIOUS radar.

WAY too big. The XF-92's nose is really small. The original intake's only about 7mm across in 1/72nd scale.

I've offered up the MiG-21 intake and it'll work well: cutting the nose back to the point where it's the same diameter as the intake has the point of the shock cone almost perfectly level with the original intake lip. All I really want is a simple illuminator, for the beam-riding AAMs. Something like the little Ekco set in the nose of the Fireflash-armed Swifts.

Here's a weird thing: the fuselage has quite nice, if sparse, engraved detail, but the wings are covered in a chequerboard of raised rivets. It's almost as ifthey were tooled by two different people (maybe they were...).

You know how we get called "big kids" sometimes?

And you know how kids will sometimes play more with the box a toy came in than the expensive toy inside it?

Well it probably tells you something that I received five kits today, three of which are exquisite modern Airfix toolings, and which one has got me running around the house finding bits and making plans? The cheapest, oldest and crappiest (the XF-92A)....  ;)  ;D

Go to go with where the Mojo takes us, regardless of stash, plans, lists, when inspiration strikes you just have to go with the flow sometimes.

I have just remembered, I have a Testors XF92a in the stash. Got it cheap off ebay a few years back. It was going to be part of a shadow build, and the pointy end of skydiver.

That sounds like a Plan!

I'd like to see that one.

Quote from: Weaver on September 01, 2025, 05:08:06 AMThe XF-92A was just a cheap drive-by while I was looking at other things. It's a VERY old and basic "desktop" model, with a head-on-a-shelf cockpit and ZERO undercarriage, just a substantial stand. It does have a nice little decal sheet from when Testors reissued it in the 1990s though. One of the wingtips is warped, but nothing that hot water can't fix. It also, bizarrely for a prototype that only ever flew unarmed, has four underwing "rockets" that look like stubby, badly-moulded Sparrow 1s. Since Sparrow I was a beam-rider and the XF-92A has no hint of a radome, your guess is as good as mine as to how it was supposed to guide them... :o

I'm thinking:

1. Cockpitectomy from... something else. (F-84 maybe? I've got plenty...),

2. Canopyectomy from something with a more fightery bubble. The XF-92's is fine at representing the real thing, but it's a very restrictive "greenhouse", not at all suitable for an operational interceptor.

3. Nosectomy from the awful Academy early Mig-21 I've got (the one that's, like, 20% too short). That would give it a radar to guide the missiles with.

4. Nozzlectomy from something early-looking. Maybe the split "sugar-scoops" nozzle from an Airfix Mirage III would work... :-\

Cockpit from an F-84 and inlet/radome from a MiG-21 (a late one!) sounds fantastic to me! That'll give you a more matured look without going full F-16. Also, I'd prefer the pointier MiG radome over the shorther Lightning one as the former quite honestly looks faster. But these are my dimes. It's always your call.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

Remember though, it's the small diameter early MiG-21 intake with a centrebody shape that looks like half of Madonna's bra... :o

The orignal canopy's REALLY small are barely fits over the pilot's head, to an extent where I'm wondering if the whole thing is inaccurate or just really thick. Replacing it's not hard though. Ironically for something with so much paint on it, it's actually pretty much a true bubble when you include the fixed aft portion.

Currently contemplating rockets...

See can't fight the mojo  , the safest measure is often to go with the flow and once you have started to build, you can then use the momentum to get your intended build started as a gap filler whilst the mojo build is at one of the many curing phases,  :banghead:

I like that theory; thanks!

NARSES2

Literally just delivered. A stunning Special Hobby/CMK 3D printed undercarriage set for their Mosquito which is next on the build list. Will replace the numerous parts in the kit with what is basically 2 complete leg assemblies. Amazing bit of 3D printing and appears to be in a "harder" black resin. Clean up will require a sharp blade and some care, but the proof will be in the eating as they say.

Also, and basically so the above didn't feel lonely in it's parcel, another AZ Me 109. Why ? A) Because I like their 109's and B) I haven't got this particular Marque. It's the T-2 which was alledgedly the naval version with slightly extended wings, so a Wiff in the box as are the marking options. I need to find out if they'd intended the wings to fold ? Perhaps just the tips ?
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Gondor

The T-2 was a real aircraft LINK so you may need to do a little research to whiff it.
