Oh yeah, the upper deck of a Vulcan is laughable! The poor co-pilot has to bend himself in places that aren't designed to bend to get into his seat!  :-\

The F6F is quite roomy.
;D
Sat in one back in the late '70s.

While it didn't have the canopy, I found the backseat of the F4 cockpit simulator NMUSAF has quite roomy.  I couldn't tell about the front seat because some crotch goblin got into it before me.

I've 'flown' the ex-RAF F4K simulator at the Newark Air Museum, and found the front seat quite roomy by comparison with most Brit jets of the period. That's not counting things like Nimrods or VC10s mind you.

Try a J35 Draken. And try to reach all the knobs behind your elbows...

(There's several simulators in operation in Sweden, in one of which you can fly in company with the Viggen simulator next door, either DACT or joint interceptions of third parties. Amazingly good fun!)

When they had an open cockpit day at Cosford, I had to bend in to some interesting angles to get in and out of both the Valiant and the F-111, to the point where I honestly thought my hip was about to pop out with the latter...

Crimped and cramped myself getting into one at YYZ around 1982. If I recall correctly, it was originally designed for a single pilot, and was then modified for two. If true, I can attest that the 'modification' was probably limited to adding an extra seat.  ;D

Ah yes, in both of those you have to duck way under an opening hatch/canopy that's low over your head.

The Old Sarum Museum is well worth a visit for getting into cockpits as most of their exhibits allow you do that. Sitting in the Captain's seat of a Wasp helicopter is 'interesting' as there's almost NOTHING nearby to stop you falling right out!

Thing is, if they'd had a ladder up to both rather than the platform, I doubt I'd have done myself an injury. That said I doubt the old salts would've been able to get in with their hip replacements....

Old Sarum's definitely worth a visit for that very fact, along with the one down by Hurn airport.

The Museum of Flight in Seattle has an SR-71 cockpit you can sit in.

Yeah, I always get the back seat while my daughter gets in front.  The back isn't too bad.  It's nice to both be able to get in the 111 too.  Her favorite part of a visit is getting in all the cockpits.  Some are a bit iffy for me, with bad knees.

Quote from: perttime on August 13, 2025, 06:11:00 AMSomebody noted that they used to take mechanics in Bf109s too. That may have been a bit cramped.

I read that was done to evacuate the mechanics from North Africa, because the brass told the pilots to fly their 109s out, and the "black gang" would come later as transport was available.  Most pilots weren't comfortable with that, unsurprisingly.  :)
