More Air Force traffic than usual, including fast jets. There's a highway base exercise going on, and the nearest fixed base is here.

It is dark already, and I hear another Hornet flying over us.

"A road base will be established on highway no. 2 in Jokioinen for the duration of the exercise. The highway will be closed to traffic between Latovainio and Lammintie on 15 September at 8 am. The road will be reopened on 20 September at noon."

Nice An-124shots.
I've had one over the house a few times, in the pattern for Paine Field delivering
stuff for Boeing's Everett Plant, or on the way out afterwards.

A glorious sight, and they make a completely different sound compared to any of
the big Boeing jets I always have overhead. Ditto the C-17s and the occasional C-5.

An advantage of your airforce having a strategy of using motorways as runways would be that the roads will be maintained to a far better standard than that we suffer here.
Should you try to land one of our F/A 18s on the Monash freeway I suspect you would lose the undercarriage (not to mention the problem of tailgating probationary drivers...).

Ditto here in SNJ.  If the one of the Lawn Darts of the 119th tried to use the AC Expressway, in addition to the U/C getting bent out of shape, they'd either hit an overpass, get stopped one of the toll barriers, or hit some Shoobie doing 55 in the left lane

BAC actually did fly a Jaguar onto and off the M6 motorway nr. Preston just before they opened it to the general public. Doing anything like that on the western side of the M25 would be impossible now as the GATSO gantries are so close to each other you'd not even get a Gazelle down in the gaps between them!

It's as Kit said some time ago.......it's been done in the UK

This piece of highway is pretty well prepared for use as an air base. The North West end on Streetview: https://goo.gl/maps/z76KpUzvLFz

Not a wire rope crash barrier in sight.  How can you possibly hope to drive safely without them?

Looks like you have people who like to practice their "drifting" skills too, just like we have over here.

Loads of contrails in the early morning skies, but then something quite unusual. A very low BA twin jet (no idea what type, they all look vaguely the same to me). We don't normally get much in the way of visible airline traffic around here, Heathrow is 16 miles away and Gatwick is 23 so we are not on their normal paths for safety reasons I presume, this one however had it's wheels down and landing lights on, so I presume it had been sent around again by Heathrow, as it looked to be on that circuit. Anyway unusual enough for all the kids going to the local infants/junior school to be pointing at it and asking their mum's what it was doing. Oh and it was very low

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Rheged minor and I volunteer at Berrington Hall National Trust property on Mondays. Beside the car park as we left this evening, a gigantic red fabric THING that a large fan was transforming into a Virgin Events balloon. Close up, they are HUGE, and the propane burner when lit generates vast gouts of flame. Quite a sight

What ARE the RAF up to?  In the last few minutes we've had six (yes, 6) very loud, very low jets over our house. I'm not in a position to identify them at all other than
A) jet
B)  loud
C)  low.

Shouldn't all sensible aviators be sitting by the fire, wearing slippers and sipping Horlicks by this time of night?

Has someone unexpectedly landed a particularly aggressive invasion force on the beach at Aberistwatch, or is there a massive outbreak of armed insurrection in Llandrindod Wells?............or are they just trying to aggravate the inhabitants of Chateau Rheged?

Amendment a few minutes later.....there go ANOTHER two

Not jets, but I've had a couple of Herks at MEGA low level over here in the last 10 mins.

Do you think those Sandy Beret guys near you are laying on a Joint Services party tonight Mr. Rheged?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

So, UK too has had Russians buying properties and building helipads near strategic locations - and now they are being raided for money laundering...

Sounds like somebody is moving something out of (or around) the country while attention is on the tory party conference... :o

Watched the Antonov An 124 land yesterday morning on 35L at YYC. This was followed by a Kenn Borak Basler BT67 taking off right after on the same runway.  Now I say "the" Antonov because I don't know if there's more than one, but it was the one with the swoopy cheat line and "Antonov" on it's tail. Seen it a few times over the last year now.
