The IPMS (UK) What if? SIG is doing a joint display with the IPMS (UK) Harrier & F-35 SIG for Scale model world 2007.

Now this theme doesnt just mean a long line up of Harriers and F-35's with the odd yak 36 and 141 thrown in for good measure. Any of the following count reagrdless of it being fact or compleat fiction.

Fixed wing
Tiltwings
Convertiplane
Airships
Autogyros
Ornithopters
Ill stretch the point to scifi/fantasy anti grav craft as well for fun.

It can be prototypes done in a service scheme, proposed exports (of the Harrier for example) Paper projects of any era or nationalality or figments of your warped brains. They dont even have to be Military, there were many Civil VTOL projects in Britain alone in the last 40-50 years.

Im opening this up to anyone who intends to be at SMW 2007 to take part in. But on a serious note   please refrain from doing and posting VTOLs on thet hread if not intending for the model to be on the display as this may discourage or distract those actually trying to do something.
Any one unable to attend but wishes to take part and have something on the display table is welcome to send any finished model over for the show. Im currently in posession of one of Alvis's master peices that counts for the theme by default. So its not imposible to post something across the pond.

Ok now ive said all that...whos in?

Wow you guys across the pond make me jealous. Do you think Ol' Blighty would allow a penniless Yank to emigrate? ;)

Martin, we're on some kind of wavelength here. I'm trying to get an Alt. Landing Gear/VSTOL GB off the ground on this board currently.

Best of luck with the SIG VTOL build. I hope you get lots of participants!

I'm up for it Martin!  I've been planning both a Hawker P.1226 FSW Harrier & a Rotodyne Z for some time, I've even started on the Harrier.  SMW 2007, hmm, that gives me 11 months, not long the way I build!  I'll have to start cracking...!!!
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

You've got me thinking now.  Uh-oh.  This build has huge scope if civil projects are included too  Here's a couple of links for inspiration:

http://www.moller.com/skyc.htm Mollers site for the Moller Skycar.  There'se several designs going back to Mollers early days.  It includes the M400 Skycar, he hope's it'll be a 'personal air vehicle' & we'll all be flying one to work.  We'll see, but it might make a useful aircraft if not.

http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/news_events/fu...tics/index.html  Lots of designs, many from the fifties & sixties.  You'll have to trawl through to find the VTOL projects but they include a flying hotel, flying saucer car ferry, ground effect vehicles and other wonders that never made it!

http://www.americanantigravity.com/nick-cook.html  A link to a book on Anti Gravity Projects.  There have been many real world ideas for antigrav vehicles through the years although, of course, nothing has come of it yet.

http://www.lonewulfmodels.co.uk/category.php?c_id=21  Lonewulf Models.  They specialise in resin kits from a large number of manufacturers & you can find all manner of the weird & wonderful!  There's a lot of VTOL aircraft there, again, you'll have to trawl through it to find what you want.  You can find stuff like the Avro flying saucer designs, VTOL UAV's, the Heliofly helicopter backpack. Lippisich Aerodyne, flying platforms & several US VTOL aircraft.

That'll do for now I guess.....

I'm in. Already got a few ideas simmering over. Still don't know why helicopters weren't included as they are VTOL pretty much by default, but rules is rules.

The Glencoe XV-1 is a nifty kit, and a natural for this build:

You can always do ...something... with it!  Heck, add some spats to replace those goofy skids!
And there is also the Glencoe Piasecki Airgeep:

Although I like the original ITC box art better:

Sign me up for the SAAF Harrier, and I think I'll have to do that conventional non vstol straight thru burner one as my contribution.  Never thought of that...  But whose tin pot airforce?

If anyone wants various Harrier kits for this theme for bargain prices, I still have a few left over from my time as Harrier SIG Dear Leader.  They can be collected at MK, Udders, Coventry or Brampton shows.  PM me with offers wot I probably won't refuse as it's all a worthy cause.

The future's so bright, I gotta wear NVGs...

Radish

Well, two 1/48th Panda F-35s already done in Royal Navy colours.

2 POGO's done too in 1/72nd.

ARMSTRONG-WIBBLY-WOBBLY SHE HARRIER BRA36B WITH BLACK BURNT SHARK  done as well.

Could well push for another SHAR as well.

Sign me up for the Egyptian Harrier and a Finnish one as well. I'm still working on the rest of my ideas. Gods, I've even started a spreadsheet.
