After sketching various large flying things, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow gave my the impetus to actually model them, in pixels at least:

very,very,very cool...am working on some aerial dreadnoughts right now for someone, to the tune of those great old french illustrations from the late 1800's, and love seeing this sort of thing !!

It's one of my favourit movie!! (actually an anim)

I really enjoy the planes with bug's wings...

(Porco Rosso from the same director is also a beauty for those one who loves seaplanes :wub: )

For RP1, I really like your pics!! Very impressive job!

And after that, we also could imagine some air carrier for French Air Force, Germany or US Navy... Or even a Pirate Carrier :ar: , stolen by pirates after Zanzibar War and operate from Madagascar or Comoros... :wub:

Of course, the British ones will be the biggest, fastest, best Air Carrier!!! After all, they had a whole Commonwealth to protect!!

OMG! That is so cool! I love the idea (impractical though it may be) of airship carriers. I still have Crimson Skies on my PC and play it from time to time. In fact, some of the projects on my back burner include:

A "Fury" from CS, made from a 1/48 Curtiss Helldiver;
A pusher conversion of a P-47;
A 1/72 XP-55 modified CS-style (big-donkey guns, mooring hook, and so forth).

A few years ago I built a replica for a friend of a Hughes Bloodhawk from a 1/72 kit of a Hs P.75. I'd someday like to make a Peacemaker out of a B&V P.170. There are a few other planes from the Crimson Skies universe based on Luft 46 designs...

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

Don't forget the L337 Crew or Arctic Avengers, also from CS.

Most impressive!

Um, why do I suddenly feel so, uh, inadequate??

Folks,

That's some kinda cool artwork and a really thought provoking idea as well.

Looking it over I'd do a few things to make it more "realistic."

The gas envelope needs to get bigger.  A lot bigger.  All those exposed girders, while looking spot on for the "period" effect, would either be much smaller or entirely submerged / streamlined into the airship's hull / gas envelope.  I'd also make the vertical lift props a lot longer.  More like super-sized helicopter blades.  Finally, the carrier's superstructure does make it clear it combines the naval battleship and airship paradigms but I don't think it'd need to be quite so big nor stand out quite as far from the zeppelin structure.  The reason ship's have high superstructures is to allow a higher perspective on things.  An airship wouldn't need that as much and could do without all that built-in headwind.

Also, why not make the airship's shape incorporate the landing strips as opposed to having them hang off its sides?  Less drag and less structural weight hanging off of it all.

I like the gun turrets and the gun directors hanging upside down.  That's a cool touch.  The Gadfly's look perfect!

I wish I knew how to work stuff up on computer graphics like that!  Nicely done RP!

The Airship carrier is impressive, but from it the little biplanes without aft fin are more than a detail: wonferful little birds :wub:
[the word "realistic" hurts my heart...]

That's lovely work and like Tophe I do like the Gadfly's
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Thanks for the inspiration!!
