OK, you've got to start here!

I've been toying with this idea for a looonnng time so it's as good a time as ever to try it. I really do need to finish the Assault Gun Sherman as the GB on BTS ends at the end of the month. But, the muse was upon me so here is the start so far. I have an old IH logging truck model that I scrapped out a few years ago.  This will provide the basic frame and wheels. The problem is its filthy dirty so that will take some scrubbing. No big deal. Instead of the European Ford station wagon I have an American Ford Pinto for the driver's compartment. I also have the Great Dane extendable trailer kit to go with it. That will get a little modification like changes to the bed and a third axle. According to the story this truck hauled aluminum parts up to 170 feet long. At 1/24th scale that's 7.2 feet! I don't have any place long enough to store that so it's not happening. The tractor will get a third axle too complete with the half round wheel fenders some trucks use. As I didn't have these and I didn't see a way to get them without spending big money on a kit just for the fenders I started looking through the old junk drawers. I came up with three pill bottles with just the right diameter and with just the right curve on the outside edge. I measured the width of the wheels, marked them up, cut them on the band saw and cut out the bottoms.

Presto! Chango! Six wheel fenders.

It's getting late so we'll see what happens tomorrow. The wife and daughter are going to a baby shower so I might have time to myself to scrub the truck frame. It depends on how long it takes to shower the baby. I still don't see why cleaning a baby is such a big deal to the women folk!

I've seen video footage of that truck Ken and I think they built 2 or 3 of em too ..if i remember right they did have problems with the engines cooling dew to it being behind the cab ..but who cares eh? 😆
I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of this built bud that's for certain
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .

I just hope I finish it! It will be lots of fun chopping and bashing so that should keep me going. Hopefully painting will be easy with limited weathering.
The worst part of the pill bottle fenders was getting the darn labels off. I soaked them in water hoping that would do it but I had to resort to acetone to get the glue off.
I bought some super special glue for the fenders they are PE plastic not polystyrene. CA glue won't stick it at all so we'll see what happens with this stuff.

Yeah i feel your pain so to speck..even 2 part epoxy won't work 😕
I'm hoping that glue works but if not trying pinning them on ..like the real thing ..sewing pins tops will hold em down and CA will stop em coming back out . ;)

Oh wooow , this is an interesting build. I'm not that much into modelling cars, and i've never done a truck. But I do want to build this low van truck one day. Something like a GM Bison or Titan. I also figuring a low cab truck build from a 60-ies Ford C900/600 could work. I certainly interested in this build. Wish the Muse and mojo join forces and the build becomes a breeze.

Cool. IIRC there also was a Luigi Colani design proposal for such a vehicle, with a more futuristic/organic body. Looking forward to this one!

Sanding the surface will help the glue stick I'm told. I'll have to remember the sewing pin idea. Sounds useful.

Would a contact cement do the job?
But yeah, pinning is a great idea.

The cab under the load idea was tried over here too but drivers hated it. They felt if there was an accident they were dead meat. Can't disagree with that.

The glue I have is a two part mix from JB Weld that's supposed to hold various plastics. Something on the label about auto body panel adhesive. It will be a little while before I get to that point. We'll see what happens then.

We had something similar trialed here, for moving trailers onto the Interisland Ferries, as a space-saving measure. Called the Maui tug.

Can't find it online, I guess it was only ever a prototype and didn't get series production.

Seeing that kind of reminds me of this vehicle from an old disaster comedy film.

Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

One supposed advantage was if the box trailer had a door at both ends it could be driven up to the loading dock forwards or backwards. Useful in tight quarters I suppose.

That big bus movie sounds dumb enough to be strangely funny.

My favorite line from the big bus is "deploy the flags of all nations!  It's a very silly movie.
