The very first bit of Bailey Bridge, built as a test specimen, is part of a car park barrier less than a mile from my front door.

I used to have a pic of it, but I think it must be on my older laptop.

The humble Bailey Bridge.  IIRC, only because I was more concerned about watching my sector in the convoy, we rumbled across one south of Baghdad on our way to Tikrit.

For sure that bit of bridge was built right in Lydney, where I live.  ;D

Mabey & Johnson, who build them to this day, have a contract with the US Army to stockpile hundreds of bridge sections on site here, and they're ready to ship out at any time. We certainly know when they do as the truck convoys go on for EVER!  :o

A Royal Engineer officer I know tried to convince me that it all started  with Motte and Bailey castles.  Motte went off to be a Hoople *  and Bailey went on to design bridges.

I honestly expected better from you  ;)  ;D
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I have an ex-Bailey bridge about half a mile from where I live across a local creek.  It was erected back in the early 1950s.  It is still as strong today as it was then. I came across the video by chance and thought it would be of interest to others.

October 15th, 1954, Toronto and southern Ontario got whacked by Hurrican Hazel, one of the more powerful hurricanes of the 20th century. A bridge over the Rouge River, the eastern boundary of Toronto, was destroyed. Up stepped the 2nd Field Engineer Regiment, and they constructed a Bailey Bridge that is still in use, I drive over it frequently. If I know that Regiment (And I do!) they probably did it for a case of beer and a barbecue. They love bridging exercises, throw them a party and they'll put a bridge across a pothole!  ;D

Whilst not Bailey Bridge relate, a core memory of mine is when the 104th Engineering Battalion (50AD, NJARNG) sent their bridging company to spend a drill weekend replacing the old, worn-out and highly unsafe footbridge over the brook that divided the street i grew up on with a brand new suspension footbridge.
