I'm a bit surprised more of this sort of thing doesn't go on.
The military units would get good practice, the communities would get needed infrastructure, and the construction companies... wait, I think I see why there isn't more of this happening... :-\ ;)

In 1970, when the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Straights caught fire, I was one of the team sent out there to see if it could be repaired or not, but it was very knackered and had to be scrapped. To hold the damaged ends of the South tube up while it was being dismantled the Royal Engineers came in with a zillion chunks of Bailey Bridge and assembled them end on end in the recesses of the Britannia Pier!  :o

Neither the REME guys, nor us, were paid overtime or danger pay while doing all this, but the contractors who came in to take it all down got paid a FORTUNE!  :banghead:

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Always the way - civvies get paid a fortune for the same job as the Establishment types get paid a pittance to do.
And they wonder why there's such attrition in the Ranks... and why they can't replace those skilled workers. :banghead:

To be fair, and a lot of recruiting specifically promotes this, you can join up, learn a trade while getting paid to do so, and then use that skill once you leave. Better than paying for college, some might say.

That's true too, but it doesn't help them retain trained and skilled staff.
Though if that's the only reason they joined up, then it's understandable.
