Sadly that's been a disaster so far.  :banghead:

After using MILES of masking tape, gallons of Klear to seal the said tape, umpteen cocktail sticks to emboss the tape into position, the ruddy paint STILL seeped out all over the place! I'm trying to patch it right now, but it looks like what it is, a patch-up job. :(

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

The patch-up job STILL looks like a patch-up job. After a 2nd attempt too.  :banghead:

Not sure what I can do about it, and I still have to do the other SRB as well.

Wow, that's some bad luck there. Were you using acrylics by chance? They seem to run under the tiniest opening.

Yes, they were my usual Hatakas these days.

But I need some ideas to solve the problem, and how NOT to have it happen to the other SRB.

I need to replace the mounting pegs with brass ones too, all four plastic ones have broken off a couple of times each by now!  :banghead:

Hmmmm, that's a tricky masking job.  Probably not one i'd try.  Using strips of transfers would also be tricky.
I might try and paint it by eye.  How steady is your hand?

Doing it with decal strip is almost impossible as the joint rings are tri-angular in cross section and the strips won't stay perched on top while they dry out.

I have a reasonably steady hand, even these days, but my current Hataka acrylics are so mobile that the paint just flows down the sides of the clamp strips and out onto the body. That's exactly what happened when I painted it 2 days ago.

I had thought of re-paint it all black, masking just the clamp strips and re-spraying it white, but it'd probably use a whole can of white just to cover all that black!  :banghead:

You can try masking, paint white over the tape, paint the lines then pull off the tape when the lines are dry.

I had to run a rod through the rocket body and into each booster to mount the SRBs. IIRC I used a coat hanger wire.

Is there a thickener or medium you can add to the acrylics to make them less prone to running?

That's exactly what I did, but even with the tape sealed with Klear, the paint crept under the edges.

paint pens / real ink dense markers ?  :banghead:
no other ideas at the moment.  short of the utterly silly ..  mount on a lathe, and use a paint pad very gently wile its spinning  :o

Hmm, yes, paint pens might work, and I've even got a black one right here too!

Great idea, thanks so much!

[Only a few minutes later] And it WORKS too!

If, like Chris, you use the airbrush version of the Hakata paints (blue?), that could be your issue & should be able to be fixed by buying the same orange & black in their brush-paint (red?) version.

As to your current issue ... Sorry, mate, I've got nothing. :-\

Although: How do Hakata paints react to either isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits? And how do they effect your rattle-can white?
