Regarding the Blue Thunder, i think the conversion for the Airfix Gazelle is a bad idea. That kit is OOP and hard to find at reasonable prices and a conversion would only serve those who still have a kit in the stash so, a complete job like the Airwolf is the way to go.

If you're doing one kit anyway, maybe do two - a complete and a conversion.

That would certainly be an option but would make even more sense if there was a Gazelle kit available or if Airfix got theirs out again like they did with the other classics... which is something they should've done or should do anyway.

I just remembered that the Heller 1/50 Gazelle has been reissued and has been available so, they could make a Blue Thunder conversion for that kit or in 1/48 for the AMP kit.

Lovely.  AZ Models did some MD/Hughes 500 and Cayuse kits to act as cannon fodder for The Lady, if you can get hold of one.  Italeri do a Cayuse, but it's the wrong model, you'd need to do some conversion work.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Italeri does both the 500C and the 500D. same kit, just some different sprues. The 500D is the AH-6A Night Fox kit. With so many different details in each variant, the Italeri kits are a good base as you need to do work on any available kit.

There was also the Profiline/Special Hobby kit series, which had a 500D with floats, 500E and 520 Notar but are hard to find now.

Yup, they do and it's a cheap and easy to find kit.
But i can tell you that building it can be fiddly, especially getting the cabin/cockpit floor to fit the fuselage in the correct spot... :banghead:

Rui mate if it's 48th Hughes 500s ya look for what model ? D's or earlier or later?
Academy have a few to choose from and they are cheap and plentiful.
I think Fujimi have 48th ones aswell 🤔.
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .

Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

Fujimi do 48th Jetrangers too, one boxing is in a pseudo Santini Air scheme on the life with a Bell 222 in Airwolf colours.

I'm not looking for more kits of the egg, Phil...  ;) i've got two Academy 48th kits, another Italeri 1/72 besides the OH-6A Cayuse i'm building now, the AH-6A Night Fox, one 1/72 Special Hobby MD-500E and one Hobbycraft 1/32 OH-6A Cayuse... That's been bought to build as the Blue Thunder's rival in the movie, colonel Cochrane's AH-6 with a couple of 30mm chain guns but the kit is old and a bit rough and will require even more work than the Monogram BT kit just to convert it from the C to D model... I've been waiting to see if someone makes a new 1/32 kit of this in this scale but i may end up buying the Ex-KittyHawk 1/35 kit by Zimmi Models if those become available and sell at decent prices. :-\

Luckily finding D model 500s I'd easy ..it's the most common type also my fav version.
Dragons 35th scale range would work nicely if you could find em and didn't have to sell your car to afford it 😀
That's one thing that's erks me about Cochranes bird being armed with 30mm chain guns ..the weight..the 500 can't carry much and the guns in the movie looked alot more like RH202 20mm cannons anyway ..least getting AM barrels for either is easy in 35th 😁

I see what you mean but i think the RH's barrel is too long...

I remember reading in one of the now-defunct BT dedicated websites that the MD 500D's guns were inspired by the Apache's gun, as well as the 02 number on BT, which supposedly was a tribute to the second Apache prototype that had recently crashed when they were in the design stages for the movie.

I'll admit they did do a pretty good job making those props apart from a few details ..the most important being the lack of a recoil system for the guns..the M230 has a max rate of fire of 625 rpm and man there's a good amount of recoil..it's a bloody powerful round mate..apart from that they didn't do to badly 👏 😀

Oh they did make a short version of the M230 for vehicle light mountings but that happened many years after the movie 😆
