Here are my two Rotodyne builds;

Airfix Fairey Rotodyne Prototype
Airfix Fairey Rotodyne QANTAS "what if"

I found the second build easier as would be expected with my third build being a little more imaginative.  :)

The wonderful thing about the Rotodyne is that it lends itself to so many "what ifs". It is a great pity that British politics at the time destroyed any chance of this revolutionary aircraft going into production 40 years before the Osprey.

At the time of it's cancellation Westland (who purchased Fairey) was considering two versions of differing cargo and passenger capacity AND they had ironed out the noise problem was modifying the rotor tip jets to clusters of 5 thrusters at each rotortip with a smaller bore diameter.

I have a Pathe Documentary on VCD that shows the Rotodyne in full flight, fantastic!!

QuoteI like what you did with the tail, turning those annoying clamshell doors into a simpler ramp; I might steal your idea.

Feel free.....I "borrow" ideas from others all the time  At the time I just figured that a ramp made more sense for a military craft than the clamshell doors.

QuoteAm I feeling a group build coming on? It's seems that we all have one in the stash.

Mine's finished first.....does that mean I win? :P

Well, if there is to be a Rotodyne GB, it would need to be for a long time period. One thing I have learnt from building the two Airfix kits is a looong time is needed for all that fill/sand/fill/sand, prime and fill/sand/fill/sand some more.....

Worth it though.

I am up for another kit though....

I think it was still in the Airfix catalogue until a year or two back, might have been deleted now though...

madmike

They were deleted from the catalogue last year, but I am sure there are plenty lurking around the hobby stores currently

Leigh

I got mine on Ebay in a job lot with an Airfix Eurofighter, Monogram Texan, and a monogram Super Sabre for less than $20 the lot! They're not that that rare or expensive you just gotta know where to look. I have the best luck on Ebay if I search in the descriptions too and the thing I want will show up in a title like "Model Planes four unbuilt" by people who don't really know what they've got.

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

Its still available at Hannants for £8.99.  I would imagine there will be a few kicking around various hobby stores, its not like its an ultra-rare kit.

No we don't. Seems like I have to start searching for one though.

One day I'm gonna pick up one of those Rotodyne kits and modify it for firebombing.

Put it over the Northern Alberta backdrop of mid spring (peak forest fire season) sitting sopping wet on an airport ramp next to a Canadair CL-215 and some modified WWII bombers.

TAHS in West Drayton is selling Rotodynes for 10 quid. If you want I can pick you up one and ship it over to you

Dammit! I was watching that! :P

But seriously, it looks highly detailed BUt, given the time it was released , no mention of a scale and Revells prediliction at the time for "fit-the-box" scale kits, I am wondering what size the model is and what scale?

cheers
