I bought the model in a moment of weakness - it was on sale in an Ocean State JobLot store, and I hadn't built anything for months.
There was a release of the SR-75 Penetrator that came with the equally fictional XR-7 Thunder Dart.
Which may be what you're thinking of as no version came with a D-21 drone.

The late Phil Brandt built the combo many years ago. It was featured on Hyperscale:
SR-75 & XR-7

The Italeri kit is the Testors  kit reboxed. The two companies had a close relationship for many years.

I guess I "invented a memory", then ... I don't know where l got the drone.
The Penetrator thing I build years ago - in the 80s.  I know it got destroyed, but ... I moved a lot in those days.  I lost a lot of stuff.

The D-21 drone was never carried by the SR-71, but it was carried by the M-21 which was an early version of the two-seat A-12.
The SR-71 was developed from the M-21 by way of the YF-12. The first M-21 is on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle with a D-21 on its back. The D-21 was removed for a short while back in the late-'90s, or early-'00s, I don't recall exactly, when it was realized that the ramjet engine and systems hadn't been removed before the USAF donated the drone to MOF. Red faces all around from USAF and Lockheed. After being demilled it was returned to MOF and put back on display.

I've got one of those, as well as two of the equally ficticious "curvy B-2s" that Revell released before the reveal of the W-shaped original:

Got all three from somebody on here who was having a sale - apologies: can't remember who.

I have that B2 kit too, and sold the SR-75 and XR70 kit to someone on here. The B2 will be an RAF maritime patrol aircraft.

Yup - got the B2 triangle-wing.  Built it flying, then couldn't get the fishing line to stay on it - no corners, really - it kept slipping off.  :)  I still have it - it needs some repairs from travel/packing damage, but I have it.  Still have no idea how to display it unless I use one of those three-prong plexiglass stands.  :)

Thanks for the heads up, as I would need to hang it from the ceiling too. Unless I make it a purpose built shelf.

I've got the SR-75 Penetrator kit and the old Revell B-2 in my stash. Both are not built yet. I was thinking of turning the SR-75 into a hypersonic B-3 bomber. And the old Revell B-2 into a stealthy aerial refueling tanker concept. I built the old XR-7 Thunder Dart aircraft pretty much straight from the box a few years ago, but am not home right now to provide a picture.
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

But then it wouldn't be stealthy.
