Not only was it weird in itself, but I couldn't help asking myself why was a helicopter bothering with a standard approach when he could have just flown over the airfield from any direction and plonked it down onto the ground vertically?

Coast Guard Dolphins at KACY do it all the time, Kit, particularly when Spirit Airlines isn't arriving.

I wonder why? Perhaps it makes it easier for ATC to keep track of them?

Or at least the tower.

Came in from offshore Halifax one time in the old S-61, and we were late due to headwinds, and would have been in the way of an arrival if the standard approach was followed. We came in hot and high, and the pilot yarded back the bird, turned on a dime and down we went onto one of the taxiways. As an Sea King and general aviation nut, it was awesome !

On Thursday there was a CL-415 at YYC,

It wasn't a CL-415 but a CL-215, registration C-GFBF.  Found where it had been moved to, outside Viking Air's hanger on the south-east corner of YYC.  Apparently Viking Air have bought the type rights for the CL-215/415 from Bombardier ---

Saw the F-22 Raptor fly this week. What can I say ? All other pretenders eat your heart out. Did at least 5 manoeuvers I've never seen before......wow. Just wow. Pics to follow !

Lucky bugger Todd, I've yet to see one even on static display.  Mind you I know what you're feeling there, same when I saw an F-117 fly  --- seen a couple on static display but until I 'actually' saw it fly, I wasn't really convinced if it could fly --- if you know what I mean.

Had a pair of British Army Westland Apache's fly over us on the M5 yesterday under the cloud and rain at the M42 junction.

Today on the beach in Dorset I have seen a Coastguard SAR AW139 over the sea, a 736 Sqdn Hawk over the hill behind the beach and there a RN Merlin HC3 hovering far out to sea in Lyme Bay

Correction HC3A as I came close to the shore before heading back to Yeovilton so I could see the modified nose  ;D

About two weeks ago I was walking back through the park at about 7pm, one of those 'boding' blustery grey evenings. Heard a familiar sound and looked up. A Spitfire I/II in that B of B camo with the black/white or sky undersides came over pretty low and waggled its wings. Almost ghostly...reminded me of "The Shepherd" by Forsyth. Just love that Merlin sound

Cool spots Geoff. I always like to see a/c in operations.

And thanks Flyer ! I put up a proper album in this forum as well.

So today marked the arrival of a new airline to YYC, Hainan Airlines. Also the occasion is the first direct flight from Beijing to Calgary  --- and in an A330

Yet more 'trundling' up the Severn this morning! ANOTHER DC3 heading northeast up the Estuary but it was a way over the scarp edge of the Cotswolds and too far away to identify it.

Someone's either importing DC3s to the Midlands or they're running a vintage air bus service.......
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)
