This recent talk in the TFX/F-111B leads me to a question.  Since at some point I'd like to try and scratchbuild one or more of the TFX or VFX losing concepts, what marking scheme do you think would be best?  Since the whole model (as opposed to just the scheme) would be a whif, I think I would like to keep the scheme related to reality, to make it identifiable.  Either prototype style markings like the early F-14s wore, or maybe squadron markings.  Any thoughts?

If you can get ahold of FSMs Great scale Modelling 2000 or 2001 (not sure, but its one of the early one), a guy did up an article about his whiffs, including a F-111B.

Depends on what time frame you want to go and what your load out is. I would suggest a sqn. bird loaded-out, but it's really up to you the builder.

I'd go with US Navy and I'd stick with one of the F-14 squadrons:

VF-1 "Wolfpack" (the red tail markings would translate well onto the slab fin of the F-111B):

VF-41 "Black Aces" (the black canopy mask and radome contrasted against a white tail with the spade marking would look distinctive):

VF-111 "Sundowners" (how bout that tail marking on an F-111B?):

VF-114 "Aardvarks" (for obvious reasons):

VX-4 (I'd be remiss to not include this one):

Personally my favorite would be the Wolfpack!

Y'arr Jolly Rogers all the way :ar:

Kieth Ferris and aggressor schemes would look great too!

Mmm.... F-111 "fencer"

Hafta vote Sundowners.  The setting sun on that big tail would look bitchin.

Yes I said bitchin.

Weren't the Sundowners renamed to the "less offensive" Sunsetters recently?  Forgot where I read that.

A Seavaark would look good with that tail.

he Sundowners were disbanded in '93(-ish), so I doubt they were renamed.

Thanks guys.  I'm leaning towards one of the McDonnell Douglas proposals probably with VF-84 or VF-111 markings, but you never know.

Ah-HA!  That explains why I can't find anything on the web recent.  I remember where I read it now.  Turns out I was looking in an old WAPJ from back then, and they called them the "Sunsetters" and not "Sundowners."

I thought I'd post my pix as well, just cuz I love the Tomcat. :P  B) I took these on the Ranger in the early 90's. I'll be looking forward to your work. :)

Eddie, I'm kinda surprized you didn't suggest a Blue Angles F-111B after that mind blowing BA Superbug you just made.

VF-84 is so meh.  Done to death.  VF-111 are getting that way too.  Still lotsa cool squadrons tho.  VF-2 Bounty Hunters, VF-31 Tomcatters.  Or how about USMC?  VMFA-231 "Black Nights"?
