" It looks well on him, though, doesn't he?"

Whilst I've been concentrating on the P.1030, all the other Fury based stuff has been...shelved.  But whilst I was moulding the Eagle cowling for the P.1030, I was moulding the cowlings for other things.  Such as the Sabre VII cowling for the Fury, the Firebrand TF.II Sabre and the MB5 Griffon cowling.

Anyhoo, I demoulded the cowls a day or so back and did some casting earlier today, needing to cast a P.1030 cowling for the current build.  One of those was a Sabre cowling.  The way it's designed with the pouring lug, it needs little or no cleanup and everything is hidden inside.

Actually, that was a bit of a lie.  There's two ejection pins inside the Fury that just happen to impeded the curing big, so a bit of a trim to the lug and it's a perfect fit.  Although I'll need to do some sanding to blend the fuselage in a bit more and that should be easier without the radiators in the way.  Not sure if I'll scratch them with sheet plastic card a la P.1030 or resort to the resin, but either should work well.

Frankenstein also got it's engine cowling glued on.  But that one isn't quite so important.

"I think he'll get a shock when he feels this. We've run out of nails, so we'll have to start using the cutlery."

A bit further with the Sabre Fury, with some sheet plastic radiators.  Need to do a lot more sanding, but it's coming along nicely.

I'm quite happy with this.

She's coming along nicely
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

"Very probably, Michael. But we've got to keep the bogeys off the wall."

Quick coat of primer to see what needs fixing.  Hmmm.

Fair bit at the back of the radiators but the cowling join is relatively fine.  The fuselage needs some where I've had to remove the fairing.  This is a PM kit and the plastic is quite thin compared to the Special Hobby.

And underneath.  The resin I'm using seems to have a knack for blowing bubbles.

Hopefully, I can get some paint on this in a few days, although I've yet to decide on a scheme or squadron.

"Well, I think that should do it!"

I'd started putting in the sheet plastic leading edge radiators on Frankenstein yesterday, so I finished installing them earlier and once they'd set, I got to work with my favourite sanding sticks.

As well as the radiators, I've put the tailplanes on. There's more filler work to be done, especially underneath, but the overall shape looks really good.

As for backstory, a bunch of engineering students at Cranfield are assigned a project to rebuild something to taxiable status, but it turns out what they've been given is the wreckage of several airframes - the bulk of it being a two seat P.1032 and the rest from a Tempest.  They manage to get the Tempest tail to fit, being somewhat creative with the control runs.  As the deadline approaches, the engine is finally coaxed to run, rough at first but then increasingly smoothly.  On the deadline, a freshly repainted airframe, with fresh roundels and a maintenance number, taxies out of the hangar.

"This may sound like a stupid question: Lip nip nip nip bip?"

Yes.  Whilst you all thought I'd be too busy with Hornets - which I kind of am - you didn't notice that I have the slight matter of a major show coming up and I'd actually like to finish something, thank you.

One of these things would be the Sabre engined Fury that had the second colour sprayed last week and needed masking.  Having done a pair of Hornets in preparation for the second upper colour - Dark Green - it made some sense to do a couple of other things that also need Dark Green.  That Humbrol stuff sprays nice, but it's a bugger to clean out of the side cup, so the less clean up I have to do with it, the better.

Now masked for the green.  I've loosely followed the scheme in the Airfix Tempest, although I'll be using 16 Sqn markings from an Xtradecal sheet. Why 16 Sqn?  Well, the RAF P1032 will be getting those markings for reasons that will become logical when you see it and 16 Sqn had flown Tempests as 56 Sqn before being renumbered.  You may recall my last attempt at the Sabre Fury had worn 56 Sqn markings, so this is to maintain some loose sort of continuity.  I like to have everything connected, even though sometimes that's not always possible.

So, out to the shed for spraying tomorrow.

"No, I didn't, Mike, I said "Let's throw Rick's record player on the fire, that'll be good for a laugh.""

So the masking is off and it's looking really good.

Get some varnish on it later and the decals can be applied over the next week or so.  Other than the serial, straight from an Xtradecal Tempest sheet.  16 Sqn.  Think I've explained further upthread.
