I'm thinking of adding some Luftwaffe biplanes to Night attack units of WW2.....

Starting with the...

Heinkel He 49 (a license built Hawk II)

Fun with the colour schemes....lots of greys, greens, browns and black.
Nick the markings from the Hs123 kit.

Also, other countries "in on the act" could include the usual culprits...
Croatis, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, etc..

Finnish CR42s and Hs123s.....

Could be fun!! :)

German NSG did use biplanes, like this one

Initally they did used older biplanes but they switched to Hs 126s and Ju 87s. But after the Italians switched sides the Fiat Cr. 42 was also used. Really the Germans just copied the Russian night whitch/harrasment tactics, though minus the chicks flying Polikarpov U-2s. :P  :P  :P

I like your idea of a German produced Hawk II  :D

Interesting idea,

How about some Gloster Gladiators seconded from Finland?

Rad you could use He51's as there'd be a lot around and maybe one brave pilot could use the seaplane version for night attacks taking off from all those Prussian lakes ?

Chris
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I considered the He51, Chris.
The Luftwaffe discovered in Spain that it was a bloody crap fighter, but useful in ground attack scenarios.
Udet was really impressed with his imported Hawk II, and the He45 was designed to replicate it....it was awful, so was swiftly relegated as a trainer, but later used in the night attack role.

ICM has just released the He51 in 1/72nd, but the only 1/48th kit is from Classic Airframes, so buggar that!!
I did build the Hasegawa 1/72nd He51 decades ago and remember it fondly.

Of course, the RAF might use the idea too.......

Swordfish?
Hawker Hart/Demon/Audax etc??
Hawker Fury....I've got one of those!!
Gladiator? Got a Lindberg one too!!

Could have some "fun" with some "localised" schemes and markings!!

I'm also thinking that an Africa Korp Hs123 might look attractive in desert colours!

Now then......these biplane thingies could be real fun!!!
I'm not put off by rigging....simple once you've started....rolled wire and white glue, a doddle.

I've just found a colour profile of a Chinese COMMUNIST Boeing Kaydet (THINK.....sent to North Korea where it had night dogfights with South Korean Kaydets!!)

I could work through the Lindberg back catalogue with these :)

Well Rad Swordfish were being used by the RAF on night attack duties right up to the end of WWII. Radar equiped and used to patrol for U-Boats and Midget subs painted all over black.

I'm certain the Hart family was used by at least the SAAF in the East African Campaign of 1940 - so juust expand that to harrasing Rommels supply lines.

As for an Afrkia Korps 123 - I've got two Airfix kits (one will be Mexican) so I might go Afrika Corps with it.

Yes and in 1/72 you really only need to "suggest" the rigging - don't do all of it. Hope I havn't offended any real biplane aficinados with that last comment

No offense taken! One of my "rules" reads "as little as you can get away with". I can't blame anyone for going spare on rigging in the smaller scales.

Here's a nutty idea, how about captured Grumman FF-1s sent from Nationalist Spain? You could arm them to the teeth...lots of underwing bombs. You could even envision an improved version with some of those powerful german engines grafted on, like a Daimler-Benz perhaps.

I "do" 1/48th, but I like the ideas, chaps.

Lindberg kit of the Kaydet.....wow!!!

There's so much to do.....

Harriers, SHARs, biplanes galore!!

I've a trio of Lindberg 1/48th bipes on order at the moment...P-6E, and two Goshawks (Hawk II)...OK, by todays standards in many ways they're crap, but they are kits to have fun with (and I'll have FUN), especially as they're all being "whiffed"....and Lindberg decals are cool too.....well, the re-releases are.
Ideal for a few F-4Js and F-18Es anyway!!

Hey, imagine an F-4 with "SPATS"

Meanwhile, back to the next project...it'll be a Luftwaffe Hawk II, aka He49. :)

I love spats!

Absolutely, Wooksta. The East african theatre appears to be a dumping ground for all the old crap.
Great for whiffing!!

And if the '30s Cold War scenario is adopted...then we have a whole new ballgame!
