Skyvan 2

I have always liked the Skyvan and its cousin the Sherpa.  Just wish there was a kit available in 1/48th scale...

Hmmm always liked the 6 ton budgie. we have one in the coventry & Warwickshire cabinet at MAM........as a Gunship. Its known within the branch as the Skyvandle, mini guns out the windows and what looks like a deapth charge rack off the rear ramp for rolling drums of napalm out. Hopefully i can arrange for it to be loaned to the sig for the stand at telford.
I always hope for the best.

In my to-do spreadsheet is a somewhat lengthened Skyvan, to be made by cobbling together a couple of my Airfix kits.  Bigger engines, longer wingspan...

I can't believe how good this Thai one looks, though.   Thanks!

love the skyvan - just look at the character in that stubby little thing (as my wife says to me twice a week).

re-engine with some turbofans, pop a radar in the nose, new wing? - super little battlefield freighter, STOL so bad it hurts.

I was watching a RAFO Skyvan struggling to land last week here in Thumrait. I swear, it was so slow, if the engines stopped it would have stayed up there for days.

Unlike the Jaguar of course, that relies on the curvature of the earth to leave the ground.

Our first two F-16's arrived today.......life won't be the same.

Cheers

Barry, have you thought about putting some floats on it as well?  I think a floatplane Skyvan would make an interesting conversion...

Yes, yes!  Skyvan on floats would be a great idea (now, why didn't *I* think of that?!?!).  Genius!  Thanks, Jeffry.

As for the Shorts 330, you're quite right Martin.

But, since I won't get it "right" my version will still end up as something different.

And, now, FLOATS!!!

The Skyvan features in my Britain in Vietnam Senario, alongside the RAF Strikemaster
It's not an effing  jump jet.

Barry, I can only hope that my suggestion regarding the application of floats to your Skyvan did not create a need of tissues and a moment of privacy.  I was thinking that you might want to take a small boat hull and graft it on to the bottom of your Skyvan to give it a flying boat appearance, then you could rig a pair of standard aircraft floats on the wheel sponsons to provide the necessary stability.  I guess this would be a Tri-maran look when you think about it, but it would be a bit more practical and allow the use of the tail ramp without having it interfere with a really long primary float under the hull.

I wouldn't say sexy, but they are kinda cute. Dad use to like working on them though, that and the SD360. He told me you had to remember to put a pole or something in the ground to stop the thing from becoming a tailsitter when it was being unloaded, so one time, one of the bloked dad used to work with forgot to do that and voila, the thing became a tail sitter as they unloaded the stuff from the front first....
Now, on the wiff front, I'm becoming more inclined to to buy a third one and do it as a mini gunship version.

Wow...great builds !

The Skyvan is a nice looking bird.....I've thoughts of adding bigger wings and engines, from a DHC Twotter. But I'll have to check the specs to see if that would actually be to advantage.

Then again, maybe I should just build the darn thing........

Take a leaf from my book; plausability, function, utility, the laws of physics, and most definately aerodynamics have absolutely no place in scale modeling!
Now go build it!

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid
