Never would have guessed the Lightining could look so good in so many different schemes...terrific stuff :)

These look great! Non-NMF Lightnings are cool.

Those are some attractive birds.  I particularly like the "Flashfin" idea.

So, is there a good 1/48 lighting kit readily available these days?

Gary

Well, I just ordered a bunch of Lightenings... IDF here I come!

Sure is noxioux, the 1/48th scale Airfix Lightning is a fantastic kit with really nice recessed panel lines and is very non-typical for an Airfix kit, its more like a 1980's Hasegawa kit as far as quality goes.

Get one.........or two.........or more, you won't be disappointed.

I'm thinking of doing something.

With these profiles I'm trying to make them as 'doable' as possible by using decals from the spares box.

Stay tuned..............

Ah but what are you linning up decal wise as you have now sourced a ready market of What-Iffers for your more Alternative sheets. Be interesting using us lot as sounding box for a follow up to the RAAF/RAN Rafales.

Hmmn speaking of which no RAAF Lighnings ?

very nice indeed (and loved the starfighters from before too, BTW - stunning all).

Mikey Wren - you want to repost your series of killer lightning profiles here again for contrast / bonus heavy metal joy?

you'd like them richard, very cool indeed (like your own).

Hi Thorvic,

I will do some RAAF Lightning profiles soon, as for decals, I don' t know if you and everybody else on this board is aware or not, but we in the decal making business now have to get "permission" from the RAF and RAAF (I'm not sure about Canada or New Zealand?) to produce decals with their roundels and squadron crests on them now as they are "Copyrighted" and these "Corporate Organisations" that used to be our Armed Forces threaten "Legal Action" if such "permission" is not requested.

I don't know if the RAF and RAAF Brand Managers would give me the OK to be able to produce decal sheets of "What if?" aircraft/schemes in "their" markings, I haven't tried. Somehow I doubt it, and besides that its a process that quite frankly kills my imagination. I'm not particularly happy about the fact that if I come up with something "creative" and wish to create a decal sheet for us all to enjoy I first have to get "permission" off my own Air Force in order to be able to do it.

Let me assure you all that there is VERY little "money" to be made in the decal business and of that minuscule amount it is reduced even more for "What if?" subjects........I know Hannants is making a killing with their TSR.2 decals, and good luck to them.

But I did make sure I deleted my RAAF "What if" Rafale sheets as soon as I found out about this "new" legal situation. Threats of "Legal action" are something me and my family take very seriously as we are at the very low end of the socio economic ladder and fighting any kind of "Legal action" would quite quickly have us living on the streets.

Perhaps I could create a decal sheet of various RAAF Roo roundels, with permission of course, and release that, then release "What if?" sheets that have a black circle where the RAAF roundel should be and leave it up to the modeller to work out where to apply it?????? I don't know?

Any suggestions people??????

It's always easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.  I say that in all seriousness. ;)

When governments do stupid things like this, it is the sworn duty of the people to do everything they can to thumb their nose at those frigging idiots.

Maybe you could be sneaky, and just charge "enough to cover the material cost", and technically claim that you're not charging for the artwork at all.  Maybe that would fly?

I hereby declare that I would be glad to buy a sheet of said decals, and I would also be more than glad to lie my a** off to any of those ninnys about the whole thing.

Fantastic ideas, all.

Hi all,
esp Gekko.

Just bought an Airfix Lightning F.3 and was thinking of doing it as the Chinese J-7  (maybe as a Vietnamese F-7 example), so loved the Chinese profile. The idea here is that this followed on from the Hunter, ala J-6/F-6.

My latest thoughts are to do it in a desert scheme (maybe wrap around) as part of my Socialist Union (SU) red airforces in north Africa theme. I'll make it nice and pale with some Bulgarian markings and use Humbrol cream, light grey and light green. Maybe I'll add a couple of small inner wing hardpoints for AA-1 Alkali  to give a radar alternative to the Firstreaks (or AA-5 Awl in my theme)

Anyway, loved the profiles.  :P

Whatever.
