Just to prove I do occassionally make models.

In the sixties, MDD offered this version of the Phantom to the USN for operation off of Essex class carriers to replace the F-8. The J-79 engines were to be replaced with afterburning Allison TF-41-A-2 turbofans. As these were license built RR Speys, then guess what the Phantom looked like.

The model is based on an old Matchbox F-4 K/M with a spare canopy and USN stores.
Markings are from an F-8 set, for a machine of VF-211 operating from USS Bonne Homme Richard.

That looks rather tasty Nigel, should go well with selection Martin has recently produced especially if your going to the Hornchurch show this weekend.

So still got the F-4(HL) on the building blocks as well ?.

F-4 (HL) is almost complete. Much filling, sanding and swearing later. Fujimi decals are awful, so I'm waiting for some Superscale ones I bought on Ebay to arrive so I can complete the stencilling. Then I'll post pictures.

Can't make Hornchurch as I'm either ferrying my son to a barbeque or ten pin bowling this weekend. (one's on Saturday, one's on Sunday - can't remember which is which but doubtless the manageress will issue instructions). Then there's the trip to take my wife to see her brother's new arrival. One hectic ongoing social round (yawn).

That's pretty sweet!  The Phantom is my favorite plane (used to have two 1/32 F-4J's hanging over my bed growing up).  Great job!!

 Beauty, Nigel ! Thanks for sharing. Something about that paint scheme that takes me back to being a kid......ah, the lovely Phantom. And as Nevster sez, you really have to do a double-take !

Subtle difference, and well done.

I've wanted to do an Essex angle-deck what-if, but am still awaiting a model. It's work enough building the airgroup, I'm not hacking a model with an angle deck, too. Not yet, at least.  ^_^ Brasilian or Aussie, with a group of those Phantoms, A-4s and A-7s.
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

I had a similar idea for Canadian Essexes, where the lifts would need to be repositioned, or they'd receieve a refit similar to that applied to the Midway (the deck arrangement made it look like a baby JFK).  Haven't decided yet, but I know where I can get an old model of the Lexington cheap.

Oh, yeah, there is the Revell Lexington. The training version comes with F-4s and A-4s, and one might trade with others for at least one of each of the other aircraft one would need - S-3, SH-3, E-2/C-2. With one sample you can make resin copies to fill out the airgroup. Thanks for the idea!

RDB on steelnavy recons dragon/panda will be doing Intrepid as the angle deck version to go with their new range of 1/700 essex class carriers that every one is raveing about.    If u dont mind a long wait.

Nice toom btw Nigel.  Mind u it should be an L not a P. the P was the proposed fighter version of the super dooper Recci X birds that Isreal got hold of.
I always hope for the best.

Martin, I stand corrected. F-4L it shall be.
