Quote from: jcf on May 03, 2026, 12:40:16 PMThat construction of the H XVIIIA had begun is a myth
According to Reimar Horten himself, along with Peter Selinger, abridged translation supplied by Jan Scott; "The order to proceed with the building of the H XVIII came, despite my arguments that preliminary calculations were not completed. Construction was started in Kahla near Weimar in April 1945." 40 m (ca. 122 ft) wingspan. To be powered by six Jumo 004 B jets. Estimated performance figures given include: Payload 4000 kg, Max speed 820 kph or M 0.75. 16,000 kg fuel carried, but no indication of range.
I also recall seeing a brief British reference to finding this part-built airframe, probably in one of their subsequent Reports or via one of Dan Sharp's masterpieces of original research.
I should imagine that most published performance figures are indeed mythical - and any conception of a nuclear development certainly belongs here and nowhere else, but the machine itself is real.
Cheers.
