Moving ahead a year or two from the Tempest F.6 and Cyclone F.1, we get to the last of the Hawker piston fighters. Both flew, but I decided to do the Sabre-engined Fury as an RAF whiff and its Centaurus-powered sister the Sea Fury as real-world Royal Navy.

[The first installment- Tempest F.6 and P.1030 - is here: https://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php?topic=54810.0 ]

The Fury was an effort to increase the performance of the Tempest - the aircraft was 1,490 lb lighter, wingspan 2.5ft shorter and engine 665hp more powerful. The prototype flew with the intended Sabre VII engine in 1946. The Fury was the fastest of the Hawker piston fighters at around 485mph. With the end of the war, RAF orders for the Fury I were canceled but the Royal Navy continued with the navalized Sea Fury X (later F.10), which flew in 1945 and was followed in 1947 by the FB.11.

Both models use the Trumpeter Sea Fury FB.11. For variety, I decided to fold the Sea Fury's wings and also to avoid the overused Korean War black/white stripes and go for a plain EDSG over sky scheme from a Modeldecal sheet. The Trumpeter main gear legs are too short so I used the longer (if much simpler) legs from a Premier Sea Fury. Paints are Pollyscale EDSG and Humbrol sky, brushed on over Tamiya grey primer.

The Fury model started out as a Sea Fury, with the Centaurus nose cut off along with removing the arrestor hook and its "bump" under the tail. The new forward fuselage comprises the Sabre nose from a KP Tempest with the intake cut off and replaced with the lower half of the nose from a Heller Mustang. The propeller is from the Tempest.

The wing is from the Premier Sea Fury as it lacks the fold. The leading-edge radiators were scratched using parts from another Trumpeter Sea Fury, which has the exhaust slots that are omitted from many other kits. In this case, I jiggered the Trumpeter Sea Fury gear legs to extend them.

As with the P.1030 Cyclone, the hardest part of the build was scratching the correct 12-stack exhausts as seen on aircraft LA610, the Fury prototype. Why the Fury had 12-stack exhausts when every Sabre-engined Typhoon and Tempest had 6-stack exhausts I do not know. The more powerful Sabre VII engine, I assume.

The color scheme is for a post-war Tempest F.5 with 33 Sqn in Malaya, with decals from a Model Alliance sheet. Paints are Humbrol (PRU blue), Tamiya (dark green) and Testors (dark sea grey). Any excuse to use PRU blue!

,

I had forgotten till I posted this that have still to fit the lenses into the underwing lights of both models!

Perfect is the enemy of Finished. I presume. I've never achieved either.

Looks good!

Can you get side views, or low angle views, as if seen by a person standing on the ground near the aircraft? Especially, I'd be interested to see Fury F.1 nose from the side.

Good work.

Second that.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Great models - well done!  I have always liked the look of the Sabre Fury.

The Wooksta!

The Sabre one is too short - the back of the exhausts should be in line with the leading edge of the radiator.  You fell into the same trap I did.
