Quote from: Gondor on January 12, 2026, 01:31:40 AMThat reminds me of the old Air-Transportable-Units that I used to work in when I started in the RAF. Six-foot cubes, that's the external dimensions. Add inside, for the HF transmitters, two 19" racks, oh, and there were two doors on that cabin type, add in a fold-down table and a document holder, a fire extinguisher, a termination panel,

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a termination panel ?

A termination panel is what it says. In this case, it's where cables terminate, and others, in this instance, on the outside, can be joined. We used a field telephone cable called DON10, which was two insulated wires twisted together. Each wire had three strands of steel wire as a core and several other copper alloy wires twisted together with them. Horrible stuff to get to go where you wanted or to cut or join.

Thanks. My brain had thoughts on the lines of it being some sort of self destruct device. I can just see the official MoD notice. "If about to be captured by the enemy hit the Termination panel"

Funnily enough, the Blue Force Tracker, a GPS-based tactical and route planning platform, does have a self destruct button.  When I was in Iraq and giving classes on it to convoy personnel in my battalion, I had to repeatedly remind them that pressing that button, outside of being overrun, would result in serious consequences.

Of course, to any self-respecting Grunt, that is like a red rag to a bull (or a crayon to a Marine...   )

The note counting machine we use at work has a knob on top of it with a "do not turn this knob" sticker next to it.
I've managed to resist so far but it's been hard.
I'm assuming it's something to do with calibratiing the thing but who knows...

We also have panic buttons which if pressed allegedly cause a police officer to turn up in two or three minutes (the cop shop is down the road - they are #2, we are #112).
Someone did push one of them a few years ago because she "wondered if they really worked..."
They do.

I'll TRY and get this thread bock onto hovercraft sometime today...................  ;D  ;)

Well hovercraft are notoriously difficult to steer precisely: why should a thread about hovercraft be any different?

Sounds like perfect justification, to me!

I've started to decal the BH8, some of my own ones, and some from the kit.

Mine worked fine, the kit ones fell apart almost as soon as I soaked them!  :banghead:

So now I've sprayed my own varnish over them in the fond hope that'll sort that problem out. If not I've scanned them anyway so could re-print them myself.

These kit decals really are rubbish!  :banghead:

Even after two coats of spray varnish they still fall apart, so I'll be re-printing the scanned copy I made and using my own version of them.

I tried and TRIED to use the kit decals, applying layer after layer of the spray varnish that I use to seal my own home printed items, all to no avail. Every single one of the kit decals just fell apart as I was trying to slide them off the backing sheet.  :banghead:  :banghead:

So I've edited the items, some of which were unsuitable to be home printed, usually too small and/or too light, and I've printed out my scanned versions on white paper so at least they'll be visible.

It'll be a bit of a rush now as there's only TEN days left to go with the extended GB deadline (Thanks TomZ  )

Have you tried clear nailvarnish the last resort  :banghead:

PR19_Kit

No, as it's too thick for decal coating really.

Those kit decals really aren't worth the bother, I'll have to keep that in mind when and if I build the 1/72 version of the original LCAC kit.

Furious decaling going on with the BH8.

Quite a few of the items on the kit's sheet aren't called out on the instructions so I have no idea where they're meant to go, so my carefully scanned, edited and printed versions were a total waste of effort. :( No matter, some of them are going on and it's starting too look 'lived in'.

Being an RN hovercraft I've had to invent an identity for the craft that fits with the backstory and that seems to work OK, at least in my head anyway.  ;D

With only a week to go before the extended end of the GB (Thanks yet again TomZ sir.  ) I should manage it OK, fingers crossed anyway.

It's done, and with a few days in hand too.  ;D

Here's the BH8 Warwick hovercraft, complete with its 'cargo', my Tiny Shar. You were dead right Alastair, that's EXACTLY where the Tiny SHAR was bound for.

Note the updated control cabin on the starboard side and the additional Air Ops Control Cabin on the port side (made from two 1/144 scale Apache attack helicopter cockpit canopies....)

Here you can see the two monster propulsion fans hidden in their ducts, and the twin steering vanes mounted at the aft end of the ducts.

In this view you can see the tight clearances for the SHAR, but their crews are very skilled and can get in there with NO problems. The arrow points to the Air Ops cabin perched on top of the port deck structure, and you can see the additional radar sets aft on the same side.

Here's the side-on view showing its pennant number and its rather appropriate name too.  ;D

The rather lengthy back-story is posted here........ https://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php?topic=54729.new#new

..........and that will explain the 'SHOP-2' nomenclature under the Pennant no.  ;)
