Thinking a loud what about a hovercraft train? The bridge ahead is damaged so the train floats across the river/lake, then drives along the road until it can find the track again.

Quote from: McColm on November 02, 2025, 04:28:38 AMOkay,  what about a 'Flying Jeep' ?
Or a powered Hafner Rotabuggy , other 4x4s could be used?

That could go but do keep in mind that it can't add or shed parts when going from one environment to another. So the rotor or wings would have to stay on while driving.

TomZ
The Hafner Rotabuggy didn't have any wings, just a tail section and a autogyro rotor, no moving rudder. It actually worked. My version would use the vehicle's engine to power the rotor or rotors. Which would be folded when in driving mode.

That'd need one HEFTY sized road to take a train of any sort! And quite how you'd guide a hover-train without it looking like the Tracked Hovercraft test vehicle at Peterborough I'm not sure.

But it would fit the requirements of the GB.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

If this idea was based on the Australian O-Bhan Transpress (single decker bus that can run on rails and the road) just needs the inflatable skirt and the other bits that fold flat on the roof when not in use.

Now that would be fun! Cross a DUKW with a snow cat.

OK, I read up on that and it's very clever. But in your scenario how would it 'fly' over a bridge? A hover pad underneath it wouldn't lift it high enough, you'd need a semi-Ekranoplan system to do that.

Which may work in this GB, I'll talk to my fellow mod.

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

It's not meant to fly, it goes around the obstacle, crossing the river by means of the inflatable skirt and the pop-up directional fans on the roof. Besides if it has wings it's going to be too wide for the roads in the UK and might get stuck in a tunnel!

So are Ekranoplans allowed in this GB?

Ah... Finally. We anticipated this one  ;D  ;D
Ekranoplans are a bit of a borderline issue. Strictly speaking they just operate in the air but after a lot of thought and copious quantities of whisky, we decided that the fact that Ekranoplans are normally very close to water but also can achieve respectable heights, will qualify them as eligible in this group build.

Thanks, being a Moderator can be very tricky when trying to define the parameters of the GB. I tried to restrict what could qualify but it backfired, however we all learn from making mistakes.
So if I understand the rules ; flying boats with retractable wheels, floatplanes, helicopters, aircraft with skis and heliplanes are all banned. What about vehicles related to TV, films, books and Sci-fi?

The rules don't say anything about movies, films, etc. So as long as the build fits within the rules, that will be fine. Go for it, I would say!
