Imperial Russian Air Force Yakovlev Yak-1



In 1939, Tsarina Catharina III of the Russian empire issued a decree to modernize the rather run down Imperial Russian Air Force. As during the reign of her father Alexei I a large number of intellectuals and scientists had been deported and there was a shortage of people capable of revitalizing the Russian Aircraft Industry. A number of aircraft designers were released from prison and given funds to start their own company. The most famous of them was Nikolai Nikolaevich Polikarpov but companies were also started by Artem Mikoyan and Alexander Yakovlev.



In the 1940 fighter competition, Yakovlev's first fighter design , the Yak-1, was selected for production and went on to become the standard fighter for the Imperial Air Force. It played a big role in the Roman-Russian war of 1945 where it proved to be inferior to the Roman MC-CCV.
This prompted the design of the more advanced Yak-7 and Yal-9 fighters which were able to hold their own against the Romans.
