Lieutenant Boris Anprokov was nervous. It was 21:00 on moon-less night and he was scheduled to do a fighter sortie over Transylvania in half an hour. The previous nights, several of his colleagues had gone out on similar sorties and had not returned from their mission. Boris was part of the Soviet force that had been sent to assist the Romanian government to "pacify" the province of Transylvania. For many years the government had been unable to establish their rule over the province.

Troops would be sent in during the day and then vanish without a trace if they stayed overnight. Boris remembered talking to a German prisoner of war in 1945 that told him stories about disappearing German SS troops during the Second World War.

The squadron captain had tried to reassure Boris about this sortie and told him not to worry about the rumours about the jet fighters that were supposedly supplied from the UK to Transylvania. He told them that they were old De Havilland Vampires but that they had no radar and would never be able to find and catch his MiG jet in the dark.

Half an hour into his patrol Boris finally started to relax a little bit when suddenly his aircraft was hit by bullets that seemed to come from nowhere. He started manoeuvring violently but his unseen attacker miraculously stayed on his tail. It was as if the enemy could see in the dark!

As he ejected from his aircraft, he saw a black shadow shooting by......

I'll think I'll stay away from the present-day politics and what I think about them but there might be a WW2 episode coming next year.
Not sure what the Transylvanian Air Force would have been flying in WW2 however.

Well, they were surrounded by Fascist or quasi-Fascist states, so stick with British. It's not a big region/"country", so the short legs of the Spitfire & Hurricane wouldn't be that much of an issue.  ;)

De Havillland Nosferatu?
Handley Page Helsing?

Hah, I love that!

If you wanted to go non-British, McDonnell had a penchant for "spooky" names: Phantom (twice!), Banshee, Demon, Voodoo.
On the other hand, Northrop might have put the N-102 Fang into production just for them...

In the modern era, the Russians might respond with a Ka-52 Werewolf... ;D

You could make up a couple of WWII British nightfighter prototypes which "found their way" to Transylvania: The Blackburn Bedknob and the Bristol Broomstick...

Of course, that little blood-sucker the De Havilland Mosquito is a good fit.  ;)

Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

I'm trying to think of a way to get a bat into here in some way that's vaguely credible, and also to think of a way to get a Rocky Horror Show reference in that's suitable for a family website...

Perhaps just mention that Terry would have loved the subject, and leave it at that...  ;)
Less is more - let the imaginations spread the horror... ;D
