RAF B-58's

Whilst reading through the red engine thread, I saw mention of doing said exercise to the B-58. An idea came into my head as to what I could do with the one I have in the stash. Remove the original engines from the picture, and put the fuselage/intake / exhaust nozzles from the 1/100th scale tamiya lightnings I have on the inboard pylons, fuel tanks on the outboard pylons, and a blue steel missile on the centre line pylon. The engines could be a variant of the Avon, but more compact, or a completely new (fictional) engine. Paint it in either anti flash white or wraparound low level camouflage. A pair of blue water missiles could go under the fuselage instead also.

Anti-flash white on a Hustler would look awesome, even without any engine changes.

I've seen an illustration of a proposed B-58C variant with the outboard engines moved to the wingtips and, fitted with a small, nacelle mounted vertical fin (presumably to counter stability issues)? They were different engines but, I liked the look of it so, I thought of taking the easy route and simply using the existing kit parts That would of course give a bit of underwing space for things that go bang (or maybe even a couple of combined fuel tank/bomb pods?)

I'm thinking of using  the Skybolt missiles from the old Academy B-52 kit. Yes, I KNOW they're 1/144 but, even in that scale, they're big enough to scale in nicely and, with alternative fins etc might work very well.  Also, in honour of one of our esteemed colleagues it WOULD look better with a longer fuselage and wings! ;)  ;D . I've at least figured out how to lengthen the fuselage by using part of the fuselage  of an old B-58 kit I broke up for parts.

ps - I might actually do a "standard" B-58 as well. It would look gorgeous in RAE "raspberry ripple" colours!

That sounds like quite a project! Carry on!

Brad did one of these some time ago, and was kind enough to let me have a go at a backstory for him.  I'd be fascinated to read your take on the B-58

Cheers, I will have to dig it out of the stash along with the lightning, when I have cleared my work bench. I have a couple of the smaller sized blue steels and some. Blue water missiles that can be used.

I'm thinking of rescaling a B-58 into a fighter using the old 1/64the scale kit with a 1/72nd scale cockpit and F-15/14 style engines underneath. One of these days!
A British version would be fun!

Actually, that would be the 1:100th scale B-58 with the 1/72nd scale cockpit. Maybe J-79s with F-4 style intakes under the wings like a B-1.

There would at least one advantage to an RAF B-58, it would finally be close enough to
reach a target without having to be refueled half-a-dozen times.

PR19_Kit

I think you'll find that the Tornado F3s didn't have to go the same lengths as the Lightning did.................
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)
