Based on the NASA Space Shuttle C concept 'Deep Bay'

I have a 1/144 Revell Space Shuttle Discovery with the booster rockets and launch pad, its a secondhand kit which I intend to remove the vertical tail fin.
The Space Shuttle C was a uncrewed cargo launcher.

The shuttle C was an interesting concept. By using most of the Space Shuttle components there wasn't much new investment. By using Shuttle main engines that had been used five times and had therefore reached their man rated lifespan that saved a bunch of money. The only thing new was the cargo pod. Having no wings or crew quarters it could carry considerably more payload than the regular shuttle. This was in the days of lifting larger components of the ISS was a regular mission for the Shuttle and this would have been very useful.
I've got the articles from Aviation Leak and Space Technology. Maybe I can scan those when I get home and post them here for the GB. I should have thought of that a couple weeks ago!

So what happened to the cargo pod after it had delivered its load?

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.  Revelling in numptytism.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed, badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry.

It was relatively cheap to build and used engines that had been used several times and were no longer rated for manned flights so it was allowed to burn up on the way down.
That was the RW concepts at the time. Feel free to back story anything you like.

Thanks mate.  Seems like a waste of materials.

If they made it more modular, they could reuse the centre section at least, for bulking out the station they were building... like the one-time plans to reuse the ET in that fashion.

It does, and always did to me as well, but you have to remember that you are talking about a 60's mindset in the "richest country in the world". Over here at that time any recycling was done by your local "Steptoe & Son" or 3d on the return of a pop bottle.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I have discovered that Revell didn't use the same moulding as the separate 1/144 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery as the cargo bay doors don't fit. I raided the don't throw this away because I might need it pile of spare parts and came up with something similar.
The vertical tail fin has been removed and the cockpit canopy glazing glued on. This will need PSR over the next weekend.

I like that, and it suits much better than my "Pile'o'Carp" description a lot better.

The crawling launch mover is underway, so too are the rocket boosters but 'Huston we have a few issues ' with the shuttle remain. I might have to revert to using a spaceplane.
