Quote from: PR19_Kit on July 11, 2025, 04:09:54 AMI find it odd that the wings only half fold. If the pivot points were just a little further outboard they'd have been able to fold across the top of the fuselage, like a Sea Hawk did.

Was there a particular reason for only folding them a bit?

The sum total knowledge about this design to date is the Hawker drawing above, and an entry in the Hawker Day Diary that a US Navy person visited to discuss Naval strike fighter options which is a short time before the drawing is dated. My supposition was this might be related. I doubt that a lot of effort was put into it.

Here's a PDF copy of the drawing with scale bar if anyone wants it.

Lovely stuff, thanks. Got that pdf and all the other P.1121 Naval stuff as well. :-)

I have now managed to print out the parts of the drawings that I need for the immediate future.

Although there may not be a huge amount of visual progress, my mind is working on how I can build or reproduce features. I am thinking at the moment of having the model portrayed as if for a static display, wings folded, canopy open, ladders fitted, and the elevators deflected. The last though is a bit of a problem as I don't know where the pivot point for the elevators is.

We don't need no stinkin' elevators. All-moving tail, mate.

Note the tail deflection limits on the dimensions drawing for the standard P.1121. Of course, the Naval version might need more deflection....

Paul, those pictures were just what I needed. The drawing also shows a little red cross on the Gyron Prototype elevator as well, so I can place it on the fuselage as well.  :thumbs-up:

I decided to go with an additional item or two for this build, so I bought this...

Roughly worked out where to cut

and then cut.

The rest of the kit will not go to waste as I have a couple of Freightdog's Tandem Hunter cockpits which fit exactly where the cut on the spine is, so no wastage

Beautiful wood working on what assume was a wind tunnel test model! Thanks for those pics.
I wonder where that model and many others ended up. You could have a museum full of those.

Pretty sure its the 1/8th scale windtunnel model which was at RAF Museum Stores, Stafford when I took photos of it.

Isn't that the Hunter with one wing set further forward than the other? I may be wrong but that's not a frustration you want to find out after using those lovely resin bits!

I believe so.

I have added another kit to the parts supplied list.

Not actually using much from the kit, just what is in the picture below

I had been looking at pictures from the Secret Projects Forum when I came to the conclusion that the windscreen of the Hunter was not right; it actually looked more like the windscreen from the Lightning. That's why I pulled out of the stash the Sword kit. The instrument panel would be more in keeping with the aircraft as well. Below are the two canopy parts together,

Lightning on the left, with the Hunter part on the right. Below is a cut-down section of the drawings I am using,

This shows both the plan view and the front elevation of the aircraft, which shows why I am doing this. I want to try and get it right, I am even going so far as to try and build the air-to-air refuelling probe, at least this should mean I will only need to build one ladder for the aircraft, as the other one will get in the way of the probe

The cockpit widths are very similar between the Hunter and Lightning,

Even so, the plans call for the side of the cockpit to be a bit shorter than the length of the Hunter canopy, not a problem as I will be modelling that in the open position. It's all smoke and mirrors, isn't it, and it's not as if many people will know, is it?  ;D

Lots of planning going on, even if not much plastic is being cut. I received a Blackdog EE Lightning F.2A detail set today with the intention of using its Airpass radar in the nose of the P.1121. However, it's moulded as part of the central intake and nose undercarriage bay, so it's not suitable for what I want. I have instead ordered a Blackdog Buccaneer update set, which includes an exposed Plue Parrot radar, which was a development of the Airpass radar, and, being from the Buccaneer, it's quite fitting to put it into this aircraft.

I'm thinking of giving the aircraft an unofficial name, "Narwhal", due to the pittot tube location.
