Not allowed to share? That's someone being a bit overly 'secure', isn't it?

After all, it's not as if the P.1121 is still on the Secret List!

It's an intellectual property kind of thing Kit. These are very good drawings that have not been published, so the owner doesn't want them out in the open until they have published them themselves.

Wouldn't the intellectual property belong to Hawkers descendants?

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

I have no idea if it is an intellectual property problem or not, which is why I said "sort of thing". I was simply asked not to share or distribute the drawings I was given, and so I shall not include them in any pictures I take nor send either digital or hard copy versions to anyone unless told I can by the person who sent me them, nor shall I say who sent me the drawings.

I can help out with scaling the drawings if you want.

Exactly why I asked the question, but we're not allowed to see them, so scaling them would be a tad difficult.................  :banghead:

Getting the drawings scaled to 1/72 would require some work on a graphics program, I guess. Getting the scaling just right might be the hardest part, depending on what program you use.

How did I miss that Whirlybird made P.1121s? Not sure if they're in production anymore, but I may have to find one at Telford.

Thanks for the offer Hobbes, I am managing reasonably well, although I have gone through several sheets of A3 to get just two good drawings to scale.

The art package I use is Paint Shop Pro7. I can increase or decrease the size of a picture as much or as little as I like by a percentage, while keeping the aspect ratios the same. The problem is getting the percentage right, the fact that some of the drawings have dimensions in feet and I have a 1/72 ruler that is approximately 12 inches long in 1:1 scale, so I can check certain dimensions then adjust the percentage and print again, add infinitum

I have one page that was not to the scale I wanted in the paper draw, waiting for me to find out if I need to invert the paper to use the other side that I have not printed on. I am also buying a new ream of A3 paper tomorrow afternoon after work, so I don't run out.

I use PaintShopPro 4 and with that you can make the item any number of pixels wide you like.

I know the span of the real aircraft, divide it by 72 and multiply by the 'Graphic Factor' of my PC/software/printer setup (7.85 in my case) and make the span of the drawing expand or contract to that number.

The real problem is working out the 'Graphic Factor' in the first place, it takes a while and a few sheets of paper, but you only have to do it once.

The key to doing this easily is to have a graphics program that can work in real-world units instead of pixels. I use Adobe Illustrator for this, but most vector drawing programs should be able to do it.
To scale a drawing:
1. From the known dimensions of the real aircraft, calculate the size in your scale.
2. Draw a line of that length.
3. Place that line over the scan/drawing.
4. Resize the drawing until your line fits the drawing.

Mossie

Simplest way is to use a photocopier with a scaling option. I used to co-opt the one at my last workplace when no-one was looking. If your local library has one it might be useful, although depending how much they charge it can get a little costly as it takes a little trial and error to get the positioning right.

You work out the percentage difference between the drawing and your scale dimension and key that in. It might be slightly out as you can usually only input whole numbers. One old photcopier I used tended to get it slightly short, so I added a percent or two to compensate.

I'm quite happy with my pixel based PSP4, it works for me, and that's what's important for each of us.

Good luck with that, they appear on the bay every now and then, but otherwise are like hens teeth

It's a copyright issue. The publishers will have applied for a licence to use an image to whoever currently owns  it. But copyright also applies to the book and the publishers can sue if you copy the image out of the book, regardless of whether they own it or not.

Generally, if you take a copy for personal use of a small part of the book (I forget the percentage) you infringe the copyright, so if you where to send this to Kit this shouldn't cause a problem. Post it online and it could (the ease of which this can be done causes huge issues). However, it comes down to the publishers discretion as to what they will allow.

I worked for a university, naughty lecturers frequently copied large chunks of books and handed them out to multiple students, year on year. Understandably, publishers didn't like it on this scale and more than one university has been hit with a hefty legal bill.

As Overscan is the author and admin here you could ask him directly if its okay and that should sort your issue out, assuming he agrees.
