Quote from: Old Wombat on June 25, 2025, 05:31:10 AMThe title of the GB should be the give-away;

For example;

This "The Lunar Vehicles/Spacecraft GB" implies, to me, a tighter field of expression around vehicles to travel ON our Moon (Luna) and TO/FROM our Moon (Luna) BUT I don't see anything in the description that means you can't be inspired by the likes of Francis Godwin, Daniel Defoe, Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, H. G Wells or  Georges Méliès, or any classical depictions of flying to the Moon, or the post-WW2/pre-Apollo science fiction writers & artists. There's still room for your imaginations to work.

While "Space GB", leaves the door wide open to anything science, science fiction or fantasy based across any planet, star system, galaxy, time period or universe your mind can come up with that might or might have ever existed (or not).

One of these formats will work for one group of people, while some will appreciate the other, others may like both. I can't see too many people liking neither (subject matter aside, we're talking GB formats here).

Very well put. :thumbsup:

If we leave this one relatively tightly constrained, then the following one should be more loosely constrained (I can't remember which GB is up next, sorry), & I think the title does lend itself to a more tightly constrained GB this time around.

The Amphibian/Amphibious GB is next then Operation Downfall, which, by its subject matter, lends itself to a tightly constrained GB

Oooer, perhaps I better hold fire on building my Shorts Sealand then.  :o

Nah, I've started it now, so I'll just have to get ANOTHER amphibian kit.  ;D

"Amphibian/Amphibious" is pretty open, though, as long as the subject call travel from liquid to solid, and solid to liquid - nothing to say what either the liquid or solid need to be, & for amphibious flying boats or seaplanes, nothing to say what the "air" is made of, either. ;)

Er....https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amphibious_warfare_ship

And a flying boat by definition isn't amphibious.

Pedantry over.

Fair amount of thread hijacking of late, do we need a separate thread (threads?) to discuss Amphibian/Amphibious and Downfall GBs?  Probably best to keep our respective powders dry, voice opinions when the chances arise and let this thread return to spacey wacey stuff.

I point out that a PBY-5 is a flying boat & would be ineligible for the GB but a PBY-5A has retractable landing gear with which it is capable of moving from water to land & vice-versa under its own power, & is defined as an amphibious flying boat

Yep regarding eligibility but the -5A an amphibious aeroplane (see, e.g., https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_PBY_Catalina) not an 'amphibious flying boat).

I'll agree to disagree (in part) but this discussion is for a later date & different thread. :thumbsup:

Have a three way mod discussion and then just tell us.

That's what I meant. Unfortunately I had people waiting for me in the hotel lobby whilst I was typing it. Whence the other typo as well.  :banghead:

NARSES2

Can we please leave discussion of the next two GB's until we get this one sorted ?

I'm seriously tempted to give up with this, it's like trying to herd cats and dogs  :banghead:  And to cap it all I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the subject. Indeed I've found a lot of the recent GB's of no interest.

However what I intend doing, unless anyone raises any serious objections, is to lock this and the Rules thread at approximately 8:00am tomorrow (Brussels time) and give the Moderators a few days to decide how they want to deal with the 2 questions I've raised. Once they have formulated their  approach I will then issue the amended rules.

Now, this approach by definition means that we will be going back to a clean sheet of paper and that the vast majority of discussion that has gone on will become irelevant. Sorry if that offends, but it's the only way I can see of getting us out of this quagmire.

Can I also remind people that I am not a Moderator when it comes to GB's. I will help the VOLUNTEER moderators out  in any way I can and will also offer advice if asked. However I don't actively moderate a GB as such, although I will go through each reply in my capacity as a site moderator. I may have ended up moderating some GB's in the past but that has only been when the moderators have found it necessary to step down part way through.

Until tomorrow morning then.

Right, as there have been no replies to my post above I assume there are no objections to my suggestion.

Thus the thread is temporarily suspended.

NARSES2

Right just so you know we haven't gone away a couple of updates.

Firstly Mossie has had to withdraw as a Mod for reasons which I totally understand. That means you get me as a co-moderator.

Secondly we are well on our way to agreeing a set of rules between us and the plan is to publish them early next week.

I will start new threads for this set of rules and the discussion around them as we have gone back to a clean sheet of paper and all the previous discussions are more or less irrelevant. This and the existing Rules thread will remain locked.
