I just thought of a Canadian TSR.2 with the snazzy gloss aircraft grey overall paint job, the cool red & white lightning bolt/stripe down the side & Maple Leaf on the tail.

Who else might want TSR.2's besides the RAF & RAAF?  Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, South Africa...

My Canuck .2 will be camo like the CF-100 and 104 had.....

The ADC grey birds look great with a lighning stripe, like a Voodoo, but it just doesn't look right to me on high wingers like the Arrow or TSR.2.

But I sure wouldn't complain if somebody built one !

Japanese multi tone blue cammo for starters. also thinking og Chiliean, Peruvian and other south American countries as well. A Tiwanese just popped into my head along with several other other SE Asian countries. Damm, at this rate I'm gonna need about 15 of the airfix kits when they come out.

*chuckle* USAF after the TFX fails to work out?  That'd give you an assortment of options on marking schemes.

If the TSR.2 won the TFX contract for the USN would the Navy still need the F-14?  I can see the TSR.2 as an A-5 or A-3 replacement but not as a interceptor.  Was manueverability a factor in TSR.2 design?

I'm imagining grey & white USN TSR.2's evolving to TPS TSR.2's.  Perhaps, a few TSR.2 in aggressor sqdns.

The TSR.2 (optimized for low-level flight) wouldn't have been a better air superiority aircraft than the Tornado, I suspect. Also, the TSR is rather large (27 m long vs. 19 m for the F-14), which would make it hard to operate from a carrier. And IDK if there's room in the TSR.2's nose for an AN/AWG-9-type radar.

You could always use the approach the original Vigilante mockup used and go with twin vertical tails.  It'd be a bit more of a mod, but is it that extreme?

TSR 2 users:

NATO:

At the time of TSR 2's introduction NATO airforces were using the unfortunate F104 Starfighter as a "nuclear" strike aircraft.  NATO then went over to a "flexible response" approach which encouraged the purchase of lighter ground attack planes.  If the change had not happened, a reduced range TSR 2 might have found a role as a SACEUR strike force replacing F104s with Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.  In due course Turkey and Greece would have adopted the type.  Spain might also have joined inthe 70s.  Denmark and Norway would not have taken the type as they did not use nukes.

Sweden

The Viggen programme was concurrent with TSR 2.  In the same way as BAe work with SAAB on Gripen, a more openly pro-NATO Sweden might have worked with BAC on a Swedish TSR 2.

Others:

If the TSR 2 had emerged as a more cost effective Canberra replacement, one could add a raft of Canberra users to the list of TSR 2 operators:

Argentina
Peru

South Africa
Rhodesia/Zimbabwe

USAF

New Zealand

The aircraft might also have been adopted by:

Brazil
Pakistan

My favourite alternative is the Frog TSR 2.  France decides that the Mirage IV is too expensive and throws its lot in with the UK to build a European strike force based on TSR 2 or is that ERS 2?

Enjoy!

How about India?  Plenty of Canberras that need replacing?

I'd post an image of a 5 Squdron IAF TSR2, but I can't work out how to!

QuoteWould an Indian TSR2 have the laser designator though?

Hi Lee

Indian Jags have the laser designator and the Mirage 2000 carry a designator pod. The Indian Air Force uses a mixture of British, French and Soviet bombs and Missiles so adding the fairing to the TSR-2 makes sence.

You just need the French LGB's or fit AS-30 SL's.

...when originally specified the BAC. TSR.2 was to have carried the 'Martin/Kongsberg Bullpup' ASM., this was in turn replaced by the 'Nord AS.30', which in turn was superseeded by ASR.1168, later known as the 'BAC. TV. Martel', which was designed especilally for carriage on the the aircraft !

...other tactical ASM's looked at were the precursor to the 'Nord/MBB. Kormoran', the 'AS.33/34' and according to the paperwork a 'laser tracking bomb' which i can only assume to be 'Paveway' as i am unaware of any UK. or French development work being carried out in this area at that time ?

hoping this is of some use...

happy modelling, cheers, Joe

just some musings...for a 'different' model how bout some chemical spray tanks underwing similar to those on the RAE.'s Hunter FGA.9 ? or to be really different, a current one in Indian or even Chinese markings with a pair of those massive soviet ramjet asm's avaliable in the current weapons set !
