1/72 RAAF A-10 Bushpig/Grey Viper
« on: February 19, 2021, 03:47:23 pm »
Hi all,
This is the Tamiya boxing of the Italeri kit, purchased at clearance price from a bookshop that was going out of hobby supplies (a couple of years later they thankfully got back into it with Airfix and Humbrol). It sat for a while as I didn't have any particular plan for it, then stumbled on the idea of a Royal Australian Air Force aircraft in desert camo. I got the kit together but ran out of steam while painting, so back in the box she went.

Fast forward another 3-4 years and I found some decals for a RW RAAF F/A-18 project, bought them, then discovered they weren't suitable. I thought about how to use them as it would be a waste to stash and forget about them...I saw the viper's head decals and got to wondering....

Oh, dear, they are actually RAN roundels not RAAF ones, mate. Not your fault. They have the little white ring around the outside which is a mark of the RAN version of the roundel.   :banghead:

Didn't know that, I've seen that southern cross fin marking on a F/A-18 though, was there a RAN Squadron that used it also?

Looks good Zac

Shame the RAAF (or Army back when they operated fixed wing aircraft) didn't operate any RW.

Good job Zac.

Don't worry about the white ring (it was news to me) as that only applies in real life.

I thought it was similar to what training (non front line ?) aircraft have in the UK, so at first looked 'odd' on a tactical aircraft (but still good!) As for RAN or RAAF, maybe this is aircraft of the Royal Australian Marines Air Wing!
Oh to be whiffing again :-(

It looks suitably lethal for sure.

The white ring around RAN roundels, really, only applied to dark blue coloured helicopters (UH-1's, Wessex-es, etc.) & some trainers (Macchi MB.326) to delineate the border of the roundel against the same or a similarly blue background.

I think they should have made the ownership of the aeroplane a bit clearer.............  ;D ;)

Thank you folks, I'm pleased with how it turned out but to be honest I struggled to finish it more than anything in a while. I'm not sure why.

I thought it was weird Hawkeye included it on the sheet. There were enough white circles to go under all the roundels and I figured it was for a reason!

Not your fault mate.  Not many people know the difference and I wouldn't expect you to.   It's an odd, minor marking difference between the services and as Guy points out, it's even more obscure than even I realised, being limited to RAN choppers mainly.  I always just understood it was how the RAN marked it's planes.  I know I've personally been guilty of using RAAF roundels on RAN aircraft because I lacked the RAN ones.  Anyway, it's a nice plane.  Well done.

Nice work, Zac - a very impressive return!

Yeah, sometimes these things fight you all the way, or you lose interest for whatever reason... but you got there and it looks really good.
