Saw the Spey Mirage IV built/phographed on the TSR2 site, and loved it!
All that white and roundels.
What mods needed other than new exhausts and what do I have to do to modify the Mirage IIIE to either a Spey-engined example, or an Avon example?
I'll be able to fit at least ONE of them into "The Master Plan" as it's going rather well at the moment!

Fat bottom Mirages make the aeronautical world go wild!  Spey powered Mirage III sounds like a real easy modification if you happen to have the Spey exhaust, all you will need to do is make the fusealge a bit wider and maybe remove the shock cones from the intakes since it is a turbo-fan and will need all of the air flow/air mass it can obtain to turn and burn.  If that works, how about a Spey powered Mirage V, F1, & 2000?  As far as dimensions for this dementia go, how does the physical size of the RR Spey compare to the GE F101 & P&W F100?

Hi Rad

Funny you should ask that as i was reading up on it in the Modern Combat Aircraft book on the Mirage Family. No detail on the IIIK except that it was Spey powered, but the IV had the new jet pipes, the fuselage was extened by two feet where the intakes are and the upper fuselage was slighly higher (3 inches) to accomodate the new engines. Avionics from the TSR-2.

Not sure what the Mirage IIIK was supposed to replace, the Hunter i guess.

Cheers

Howzabout a bigger relief tube for the pilot, cuz they'll be pissin' 'emselves when they light them burners!

I've often wondered about replacing the standard Speys in the BAC-111 with military jobs, complete with reheat. SHEEEEEEEIT, whatamover!

From the pics I've seen, the Avon-powered prototype is fairly straight-forward, just a change at the jet pipe.  I suspect the Mirage IIIK might share a somewhat larger fuselage with the Mirage IIIT prototype (SNECMA/P&W TF304).  The built military Speys are somewhat smaller than the F100/F110 series engines.  The TF41 variant of the Spey is rather closer to them, and the TF30, in size and airflow.

Rat, that sounds like the flying testbed for the F124 derivatve of the TFE731 installed in the Chung-Kuo, it had these afterburning engines replacing the TFE731's on a Falcon 10.

iv a drawing on the site showing the outline differences between the Atar and Spey Mirage IV variants...as you said rad an easy enough conversion...

the piccies are of a big scale aluminium and wood scratchbuilt i did a few years back, now in the possession of BAe Heritage... (saves me from storing it!)

happy modelling, cheers, joe

The BAC/Dassault  Mirage IV K envisioned as a replacement for the TSR-2 program when it was cancelled as a cheaper European alternative to the F-111K.

The model is done in 85 Sqdn markings and carries a Supersonic Low Altitude Cruise missile (Nuclear Armed) that were in development for the TSR-2 before ite program was cancelled (Our version of SRAM i suppose)

Zen

Is this the much vaulted Spey Mirage IVK?

Would be nice to see it with a escort of say Spey Mirage III-K's
Or F1's.....

Nice work Thorvicson. But what about the SLAR's? Or would it have used the same large downward scanning radar as the French version?

Sweet ! A very delightful rendition of a rather ugly aeroplane !

:P

Just something about them, with that long nose, makes 'em look ungainly.......but having said that, the underside looks phenominal ! In that tone of grey with those big RAF serials......and the tanks and the four-wheeled units. Love the missile as well.

Cheers !

 YES!

saw one as a kid on hols in france and have had mirage iv horn ever since....

i mean, yes, she's no tsr2, not by a long way, but great looking plane - think she would have been up for a tussle in the falklands though? (she would have had to have been - with mirage iv's around, the vulcan might not have been in service in 1982)

great job AGAIN thor!

Cor, lovely Geoff

What kit is this?

Like others, I think the Mirage IV is a real beauty (hell, all the Mirages are with the obvious exception of the butt-ugly F-1)

85 squadron was my dads first posting in the mid 60s (Canberras and a couple of "hack" Meteors) so its nice to see one of their birds

Looking really sweet Geoff... the Mirage certainly looks different in an RAF. colour scheme (love the 'cruise' too...fits neatly, almost reminds me of the French's own ASMP.!)

hmm...so whats next re. an international lineup of '339/343's etc. ...Bell 188, Vigilantie, F.105, B.58B...???

again brilliant modelling, cheers, joe

Cheers guys

Zen - Not sure on the SLAR i assume French based fit as nose space was limited and the downward one was right where the fuselage was extended so it kinda blended in a bit, there is a bump there so that will have to do.

Patrick - Well you could always do a Belgium version as a longer ranged bomber to complement the Mirgae V's your airforce used. Either a Standard French one or the lengthened BAC/Dassault Spey powered version.

mmmm, now there's an idea. And then I could base it at Kleine Brogel and make use of some of the nukes the US don't have hidden away overthere  <_< .
