World aviation museum and gate guard map
« on: October 18, 2016, 08:14:21 am »
I think this is the appropriate forum to post this: I am working on a map of aviation museums and gate guards.  So far I have about 850 sites; I figure I have about half of the world's museums and 1/10th of the gate guards, so it will be a long project and probably never "done."  I include any museum with aviation artifacts, and there's a separate listing for other interesting sites such as memorials, factory tours, etc.  Please check it out and let me know what you think, and what I've missed.

You've got a job and a half on there!  :o

I know of a few gate guardians in the UK that you could add, I'll put a list together and post back on here.
Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Cool! I've been wanting something like this to spot the places near me in SW Oklahoma. In particular Altus AFB in Altus, Oklahoma. Oddly enough it seems to be a pain to look for any information on the internet about it. Usually, AFBs have some type of SOMETHING on display but I can't find anything for Altus AFB.

Also, Tinker AFB up in the Norman/OKC area. Pretty sure they have something going on but I don't remember what.

The only one I've actually been to that I can recall is the AF Armament Museum at Eglin down on the FL panhandle. That was a pretty neat thing all around.

One thing I'd like to mention is the Science Museum in OKC. It has an Aviation wing with some neat stuff including some big innards of an Awacs that you can fiddle with all the buttons and stuff on. (Actually, I don't know if they still have that.... they did 25 years ago, though.. lol  )

Here's some pics of some of the stuff at the Oklahoma Science Museum:

Thanks, guys!  I will add the OK stuff tomorrow (I am off to work now,) and eagerly await the UK gate guards.

The map is posted on my Facebook group, The International Aviation Museum Guide.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/365080863684050/

Shooooot yeah, dude! I'll join all three.  And glad I could help in some small way. Not a lot of folks know about the Science Museum having that aviation wing.  Or, it seems like not a lot know.. it's never popped up in any of my searching. Only reason I know about is that I've been there a few times back in grade school for field trips.

Look for me on FB if you'd like, Brad Myers.

Post Script:  I know an aircraft mechanic that works on the heavies at Altus AFB. I'll try to ask him what, if anything, they have there and get the info back to you.

I'm going to review this tonight on the home computer instead of my phone. I might have some Chicago suggestions if you don't have them already. This sounds really good.

Got ahold of aircraft mechanic buddy, I'll quote verbatim what he told me and you can use the information as you see fit. I asked for a bit of clarification as to where exactly the 135 and 141 were but he hasn't gotten back yet.

I see you have Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry already. Cool! They have a nice Stuka and a Spitfire plus I believe an entire 727 on display.
Not many folks know there is a restored Wildcat on display at Chicago's O'Hare IAP. It was recovered from Lake Michigan and is in the markings of the plane flown by "Butch" O'Hare. Here is the whole story.

If I find anything else I'll throw it into the mix.

It appears Midway Airport in Chicago has a Dauntless on display.

Illinois Aviation Museum, Bolingbrook, IL

You map appears to be missing half of Australia and most of the Pacific, including New Zealand...

The Moorabin museum is on the map Brad.
Coincidentally I will be there on the weekend.

Didn't see the link above the map. All I mentioned are there, that was a pointless endevour on my behalf. :banghead:

Meh! My first thought was "he's chopped Aus in half" and then I tried to click on the map and nothing happened.
As far as pointless endeavours go what you did ranks at almost zero compared to everything that goes on in Canberra.

I've managed to find the entire world map with all the stuff that Reddfoxx has added so far.

And Australia and New Zealand are on there OK.  ;D

Try this :- https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1YglU7IxTI_xdJtGCPwljGoFWn-8

It always opens up centered on Dayton OH so you need to hit the '-' key a lot to get anywhere else in the World to come visible.

That's an amazing piece of work

One of our local hotels has a DH Dove parked on a pole outside (it is the old Croydon Airport hotel) and we have a fair few BoB airfields around which have gate guardians. I'll have a good look at your site and see if I can fill any gaps in
